3D technology shows that Atleti goal was not a goal
Espanyol’s 3-3 tie with Atlético Madrid may have gone differently had one particular Atleti goal not been counted, and it seems it shouldn’t have.
Atlético Madrid led the game against Espanyol 3-0 after 46 minutes, but Espanyol made an incredible comeback to tie the game and end it 3-3. They, however, feel they rightly should have won it.
One of Atleti’s three goals was highly controversial - the second, scored by Antoine Griezmann, was questionable. Officials first did not call it, but then decided to call it a goal after the VAR was unable to determine if the ball was over the line.
Espanyol disagreed with that decision and is taking it up with the Competition Committee, requesting that the result be annulled. This video, created by architect Nacho Tellado and published on Twitter by Archivo VAR, shows a 3D recreation of the controversial goal. It actually shows that not only did the ball not cross the line, but it still needed 10 more centimeters to do so.
LaLiga is one of the only major soccer leagues that does not use goal-line technology and that continues to create issues like this one. If the Competition Committee decides that the game must be replayed, it would have to be next week as there are just nine days left in the LaLiga season.
