“A blessing”: Inter Miami coach Guillermo Hoyos on what managing Messi is really like

Inter Miami coach Guillermo Hoyos emphasized what having Lionel Messi at the helm of the Fort Lauderdale squad means to him.

CARMEN MANDATO

Inter Miami has hit a positive stretch since Guillermo Hoyos took over as head coach, picking up two wins and a draw. The run has helped restore confidence in the squad after a disappointing Concacaf Champions Cup exit.

The early results have given the club a sense of stability as it looks to build momentum in MLS play.

Messi and Hoyos reunite from Barcelona roots

One of the most talked-about aspects of Hoyos’ arrival has been his reunion with Lionel Messi. The two share history from their time at Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy, where Hoyos played a role in Messi’s development during his early years.

That connection has added a personal layer to Inter Miami’s new chapter, with the Argentine coach now working closely with the player widely considered the greatest of all time.

“A blessing” ahead of Orlando City clash

Speaking Friday at his pregame press conference ahead of Saturday’s matchup against Orlando City, Hoyos did not hold back his admiration.

“There’s not a day where I am not excited,” Hoyos said. “Today I woke up extremely excited because we are soccer. We love soccer. We are soccer people. It is a beautiful profession. I thank God for where we are standing. It is a blessing.”

Hoyos emphasized how meaningful it has been to share a dressing room again with Messi, praising both his career achievements and the influence he has on teammates.

Messi’s evolving role in Miami’s attack

Hoyos has repeatedly highlighted the freedom he gives Messi as both captain and leader during his early matches in charge.

While the Argentine star has not been operating in his usual playmaking role to the same extent, he has taken on a more direct scoring responsibility. Hoyos believes that balance will evolve naturally.

He also made clear that Messi’s trademark assist-heavy influence is still very much part of the long-term picture.

“At some point, we will see that version of Messi again,” Hoyos indicated, referring to the iconic playmaker role fans have long associated with him.
