A mysterious poop stops a pro soccer game mid-match
An unusual interruption halted a women’s league match when the referee spotted something unexpected on the field.
A professional soccer match had to be briefly stopped after the referee discovered something unusual on the field: a piece of poop.
The strange moment happened during a women’s league game between Alhama CF and Sevilla FC at Estadio Francisco Artes Carrasco, in the small town of Alhama de Murcia in southeastern Spain, about 90 miles south of Valencia.
Game stopped for a number 2 incident
Referee Espinosa Ríos halted the game in the 55th minute after spotting the offending object on the grass. According to the official match report, the referee informed the stadium delegate that there was “an excrement on the field of play,” which was then removed by a stadium employee.
“The match was stopped for one minute while it was cleared,” the referee wrote in the report under observations about field conditions.
The bizarre interruption lasted only about 60 seconds and did not affect the game itself.
Sevilla go on to win
When play resumed, Sevilla went on to win 1–0, thanks to a goal from Kanteh, who capitalized on a mistake by Alhama goalkeeper Alba Santamaría.
Alhama pushed for an equalizer but could not beat Sevilla goalkeeper Esther Sullastres, leaving the home team stuck in the relegation zone of Liga F, Spain’s top women’s soccer league.
Sevilla, meanwhile, kept its hopes alive of finishing high enough in the standings to qualify for European competition.
As for the mysterious mid-match “visitor,” no official explanation was given for how it ended up on the field. But for a brief moment in the second half, it became the most talked-about thing in the stadium.
