Update:

León is turning the page and looking to the past to shape its future. On Monday, the Liga MX club officially announced the return of Ignacio “Nacho” Ambriz as head coach, following the resignation of Eduardo “Toto” Berizzo over the weekend.

The move comes amid a turbulent Apertura 2025 campaign, where León has struggled to find consistency, recording just three wins, three draws, and five losses through 11 matches.

Ambriz aims to repeat past León glories

This marks Ambriz’s second stint with Los Esmeraldas. His first began in September 2018 and ended with the team finishing 14th that tournament. But it didn’t take long for Ambriz to make his mark. In his second year, he revitalized the squad and led them to their first final in five years, though they fell short against Tigres.

His crowning achievement came in December 2020, when León lifted their eighth Liga MX title after defeating Pumas. That season, Ambriz’s side was dominant from start to finish - topping the regular season table with 40 points and just one loss. In the playoffs, they dispatched Puebla and Chivas en route to the final, where they sealed their place in club history.

Ambriz remains the last Mexican manager to win a Liga MX championship, and the last to deliver a title to León. His return is seen as a safe bet by the club’s front office, especially after a disappointing year in which expectations weren’t met despite the presence of marquee players like James Rodríguez. Whether Ambriz is the answer remains to be seen.
