LIGA MX
Advantage América with win over San Luis as Santos Laguna and Monterrey draw 0-0
Atletico San Luis face a mammoth task in the second leg at the Azteca on Saturday with all to play for between Rayados and Santos Laguna at the Estadio BBVA.
Club América took a decisive step towards progressing to the 2023 Liga MX Clausura semi-final with an away win over Atlético de San Luis. A first half blitz that saw the ‘Aguilas’ score three times silenced the home fans in San Luis Potosí with the home side’s involvement in the competition hanging by a thread.
Cabecita Rodríguez opened the scoring after just 9 minutes before Diego Valdés doubled America’s lead with San Luis closing the gap on 21 minutes when Bonatini took advantage of sloppy defending to offer a lifeline for the home side.
Leo Suárez ended any short-lived hope for the home supporters as he fired home from outside the area with the ball deflected into the net to extend the lead for the side from CDMX.
The only downside for América was the late dismissal for Israel Reyes with his red ruling out his participating in Saturday’s second leg at the Azteca.

Santos Laguna 0-0 Rayados
Fans at the Estadio Corona witnessed a hard-fought, scrappy, evenly matched game in which regular season leaders Monterrey were far from their best against a Santos Laguna who progressed to post season despite finishing 13th place in the regular season, only securing a place due to Queretaro’s coefficient.
Thrills and spills were conspicuous by their absence for the fans with Santos first half chances falling to Juan Brunetta and Matheus Doria as Germán Berterame, Alfonso González and Rogelio Funes Mori offered sources of danger for Rayados.
Things become tighter in the second half with Monterrey seeming to settle for the draw despite a late rally from the home side looking to give their fans something to cheer about.
The tie will now be decided at Rayados’ Estadio BBVA on Saturday night.
