African soccer may never be the same again. Following the chaotic end to regulation time in the most recent Africa Cup of Nations final, Senegal and Morocco have become locked in a dispute that has escalated into the courts and continues to drag on today.

After the Court of Arbitration for Sport accepted Senegal’s appeal, both nations are now awaiting a final ruling that will officially determine a champion. Rather than providing clarity for fans, players and the media, the case has instead deepened divisions, with many expecting the debate to fade only gradually over time.

“A decision that came too late”

“Whatever happens, we feel the decision is coming too late. This should never happen again. Senegal walked off the pitch and Morocco should have been crowned champions at that moment. That’s the core issue,” said a Moroccan journalist who was in Madrid for the friendly between Morocco and Ecuador. He requested anonymity.

A conflict that extends beyond the final

In recent days, reports have emerged suggesting the Moroccan federation has even considered legal action against the French federation over allowing Senegal to celebrate during a friendly in Saint-Denis.

What began as a dispute between two finalists has now broadened into a wider controversy touching multiple governing bodies, including organizations involved in planning the next World Cup cycle.

Growing silence around African soccer

The tension is increasingly visible, yet few African players have been willing to speak publicly, with most avoiding a subject that cuts directly into the heart of the continent’s game.

Still, the passage of time and the eventual ruling are expected to shape the narrative going forward, in a continent that continues to aspire to stand on equal footing with Europe and South America while still grappling with disputes that, unfortunately, keep soccer from taking center stage.
