After dismal Apertura 2022, Pumas sack Andrés Lillini
The news was confirmed on Tuesday after Pumas’ dismal showing in the 2022 Liga MX Apertura competition.
Andrés Lillini is no longer head coach of Pumas. Following his team’s failure to qualify for the Apertura 2022 playoffs, the Argentine coach he was dismissed from his role as head coach of the university side ands leaves the club after after five tournaments with the pinnacle coming in 2020 when the team reached the final of the Guardianes 2020 competition.
Pumas announced the news of his dismissal of the Argentine via their social media channels and in the statement indicated that “they terminated the relationship by mutual agreement” and they recognized the work of the Argentine at the head of the university team.

“Pumas UNAM informs that it is terminating the employment relationship, by mutual agreement, with Professor Andrés Lillini as head coach of the Pumas first team.
Our institution is grateful for the work carried out by Andrés during five tournaments, in which two finals were disputed, in the Liga MX in the Apertura 2020 tournament and in the Concacaf Champions League 2022.
In addition, he promoted the arrival of young players from our basic forces to the highest category of professional soccer in Mexico by debuting 15 players.
We recognize his professionalism and dedication throughout the years that he worked at Club Universidad Nacional, first as director of basic forces and later as coach of the first team.
We wish him the best of success in his next projects.
Plans for the upcoming tournament, as well as the appointment of the new technical director, will be announced in the next few days.”
Disastrous 2022 Apertura
Pumas finished in 16th place in the general table (of 18 teams) with just 14 points from the 17 regular season games. The disappointment felt by fans is accentuated following the anticipating generated by the signings of Salvio, Del Prete and Dani Alves where Lillini’s team only managed two wins all season.
