After offloading one striker, Cruz Azul has added another to its Liga MX roster
Cruz Azul has made roster movements in its attack, opening up a foreign-player spot for a forward who had been left in limbo.
For weeks, Cruz Azul’s front office made it clear to striker Giorgos Giakoumakis that he was not part of head coach Nicolás Larcamón’s plans. Meanwhile, Gabriel “Toro” Fernández remained unregistered, as the club’s leadership prioritized bringing in a foreign signing to bolster the attack.
After several days of negotiations, the Greek forward officially parted ways with the club, returning to his homeland to join PAOK Thessaloniki FC.
As for Fernández, the Argentine had been left in limbo - Cruz Azul had already filled its quota of foreign players, and if Luka Jovic had signed, Fernández would have been the odd man out.
In the end, the Serbian striker’s transfer fell through, despite formal talks with the European player. With that door closed, sporting director Iván Alonso and the board pivoted, opting to register Fernández for the remainder of the Apertura 2025 tournament.
According to Liga MX records, Fernández is now officially listed alongside Ángel Sepúlveda and Bryan Javier Gamboa.
How has “El Toro” fared at Cruz Azul?
Fernández joined Cruz Azul for the Clausura 2024 after wrapping up his stint with Pumas. Since arriving at La Noria, he has made 35 official appearances, tallying nine goals and two assists.
