Alexia Putellas meets Infantino with a view to improving the women’s game
The Barcelona player was in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia) where she attended the Club World Cup final and met with the head of FIFA.
Alexia Putellas is one of the most relevant figures in world women’s football and this is something not lost of FIFA. The FC Barcelona Femeni player was invited to Jeddah for a meeting with Gianni Infantino to discuss the evolution of women’s football. The possibility of creating a women’s Club World Cup was one of the key items on the agenda for the meeting.
A women’s Club World Cup project is something that FIFA has been working on for a year. In December 2022 the world governing body announced that this competition would be introduced into the calendar, in addition to the Women’s Futsal World Cup. However, a year later there is still no date, format or participants and to finalise this new competition, FIFA wants the opinion of the players and Alexia is one of the key voices in the game.
The meeting between Putellas and Infantino also saw other FIFA representatives in attendance and took place in the Saudi city of Jeddah where FIFA held a council meeting with the city also hosting the men’s Club World Cup.
The relationship between the player and Infantino is positive as a series of issues relating to the evolution of women’s football were discussed with FIFA working on getting input from players on new initiatives.
Alexia also attended the final of the Club World Cup, where Manchester City beat Fluminense in the last tournament using the current seven team format.
