Alexis Canelo completes Independiente move
The Argentine forward leaves Xolos to return to his homeland. He has spent the past seven years playing in Mexico.
Argentine striker Alexis Canelo has joined Independiente, bringing his time in Mexico with Tijuana to an end. The transfer of the 31-year-old winger was completed for a fee believed to be around $1 million. The winger signed a contract for two and a half years with the Argentine club, a commitment which will take him to December 2025.
Independiente bought 100% of player’s rights to acquire him. Canelo had just over one year to run on his contract with the border club, the agreement was until December 2024. After the corresponding medical examination, the striker was officially presented on the club’s social media platforms.
During his last season with Tijuana, the forward actively participated in 39 games, with a balance of six goals and three assists.
Canelo joined Xolos in July 2022 on a free transfer from Toluca. - his third Mexican club, after stints with Chiapas and Puebla. He signed for Toluca on a $700,000 deal in July 2017. He made his professional debut in his homeland with Almirante Brown in 2012 then enjoyed a brief spell at Quilmes before leaving Argentina to join Chiapas in January 2016.
