Alexis Vega’s time with Chivas Guadalajara is coming to an end as the player is on the cusp of a move back to former club Deportivo Toluca. Vega who has had a troubled time with the Sacred Flock will take a pay-cut as he looks to get his career back on track with his place in the Mexican national side under threat unless he can secure regular top flight football.

After the possible transfer to Cruz Azul fell through, Chivas and Toluca representatives have undergone fruitful talks and the striker’s move back to the Red Devils is close to being concluded.

The obstacle for the Cuauhtémoc born striker has been the 40% salary cut Vega will have to accept for the move to be concluded. Should the deal fail, Chivas would have to fulfill the remaining six months of his contract but have told the player has been advised that he will not see a single minute of action, as was the case last Saturday, when he watched Chivas’ home season debut against Santos from the stands.

Alexis Vega’s time at Chivas has been far from plain sailing but things came to a head last season when the striker, along with Cristian Calderón and Raúl Martínez broke club rules after organizing a party in the team’s hotel on a trip to Toluca. Chicote left Chivas and moved to América on a free transfer and Martinez remains in the Chivas youth squad.

Mexico are involved in the 2024 Copa America and Jaime Lozano will overlook any player who is not turning out week-in, week-out and this situation may be the decisive factor in Vega taking the financial hit and returning to the club where he grabbed the headlines back between 2016-2019.
