Alphonso Davies returns after 110 days
The Canadian international went the full 90 minutes in Bayern Munich’s 1-0 defeat to Villarreal in the first leg of the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League.
Alphonso Davies had to wait three months to play again after being out with a heart problem since January and he made his return in the UEFA Champions League. The Canadian international started the first leg of the quarter-final match against Villarreal at La Cerámica, but couldn’t prevent his side’s defeat.
“His last test was very positive. So he will travel with us and he could start tomorrow but we will have to see today and tomorrow. But it is possible,” said Bayern head coach Julian Nagelsmann prior to making the trip to Spain on Tuesday.
Davies looked in top form on Wednesday
The Canadian was diagnosed with a minor heart condition related to the Covid-19 illness he suffered earlier this year and kept him sidelined for 110 days. The last competitive game that Davies played prior to Wednesday night was on 17 December 2021 against Wolfsburg in Bayern’s 4-0 victory in the Bundesliga.
Davies plays full game
Even though Davies missed a total of 13 games across all competitions with the German giants, he looked on top form and completed the entire game, a sign of the trust head coach Julian Nagelsmann has in him. This is a tough defeat for Bayern Munich and they are already thinking about the second leg that will be played in Germany on 12 April.
