Álvaro Fidalgo’s World Cup dream could be dashed by residency requirement
The dream of European football is still alive, but leaving in next month’s window will take him away from the Mexico’s national team.
The offseason dilemma has returned for Álvaro Fidalgo, the star midfielder and face of Club América. Now entering his fifth year wearing the Azulcrema jersey—and his fifth year living in Mexico—the former Real Madrid prospect is once again at the center of speculation.
Recently, Fidalgo, who was born in Spain, has been linked to coach Javier Aguirre’s circle, with talk of naturalization that could allow him to suit up for Mexico at next summer’s World Cup. But there’s a major catch.
The World Cup dream vs. Europe’s call
Every time a tournament ends, rumors swirl about offers from Europe. For top-level players, the lure of competing in the elite leagues is always present. Following América’s elimination in the Apertura 2025, new proposals have reportedly landed on Fidalgo’s table.
At 28 years old, the timing is critical. If he accepts an offer now, he risks closing the door on his World Cup dream. The European transfer window shuts on February 2, and leaving before then would mean he falls short of the five-year residency requirement in Mexico—making him ineligible for naturalization and a call-up to Aguirre’s squad.
The Obed Vargas factor
Sources have suggested that Obed Vargas, the US-born midfielder from the Seattle Sounders and a youth international, could be América’s immediate answer if Fidalgo departs. However, reports indicate Vargas and his camp are focused solely on a move to Europe, not Liga MX.
Even so, América is reportedly willing to make a significant financial investment to secure Vargas, recognizing him as a proven talent with international experience and a potential cornerstone for the club’s midfield future.
Fidalgo’s choice is stark—chase the European dream now and likely miss out on the 2026 World Cup, or stay in Mexico, secure his eligibility, and aim to represent El Tri on the biggest stage.
