América aim to sign a defender during the international break
Júnior Alonso is the number one option on the Azulcrema agenda. An agreement is already in place with his agent.
América’s defence could have a new member after this month’s international break. The Águilas are looking to sign a centre-back after the international break and Júnior Alonso is the candidate to reinforce one of the best squads in the Liga MX.
According to transfer market specialist Fernando Esquivel, the Paraguayan striker, who started out with Cerro Porteño, tops the list of candidates drawn up by Santiago Baños and his board of directors. The 30-year-old, who is currently on the books at Russian club Krasnodar, is believed to have given the green light to the operation. Sources indicates that the deal would be a one-year loan with a purchase option for $6 million.
South American globetrotter
Alonso is well travelled and has been on the move a lot in the last few years. He left Cerro Porteño to join French side Lille in 2017; he joined Celta Vigo on loan a year later before embarking on an 18-month loan to Boca Juniors in 2019.
He returned to French football and his parent club in June 2020 but within days was on the move again - to Brazil to join Atlético Mineiro in a €3 million deal. Since January 2022 he has belonged to Russian Premier League club Krasnodar. He has made 10 appearances during the current campaign between the league and Cup but has yet to find the net in the 816 minutes he has played.
