Real Madrid and América’s recent results bear spooky symmetries

In their last three fixtures, Club América and Real Madrid have not only registered the same scoreline; there have also been other similarities between their games.

In their last three games, Club América and Real Madrid have not only registered the same result; there have also been other types of similarities.

Having won their last eight Mexican league games, Club América are going for a perfect finish in the Apertura 2022. If they come out on top in their four remaining matches, Las Águilas will equal the record for the most consecutive victories in a Liga MX regular season.

Interestingly, América’s three most recent wins share an uncanny symmetry with the results secured by Spanish LaLiga giants Real Madrid in the same period. Let’s take a look:

Mazatlán 1-3 América | Espanyol 1-3 Real Madrid

Two days after América saw off Mazatlán in Sinaloa - with goals by Diego Valdés, Henry Martín and Sebastián Cáceres - Madrid earned an away win by the scoreline. Following an opener by Vinícius Júnior, Karim Benzema netted twice late on as Los Merengues beat Espanyol at the RCDE Stadium.

And in a further América-Madrid parallel, both sides’ opponents finished with 10 men.

Real Madrid 2-1 Real Betis | América 2-1 Tigres

Madrid then overcame Real Betis in the Spanish top flight on Saturday, thanks to goals by Vinícius and his fellow Brazilian Rodrygo Goes. Later in the day, América were also 2-1 winners on home turf, defeating Tigres courtesy of a Jonathan Rodríguez strike and an Igor Lichnovsky own goal.

Both teams broke the deadlock early - Rodríguez netting in the opening minute, Vinicius with nine on the clock - and both conceded equalisers exactly eight minutes later.

Celtic 0-3 Real Madrid | América 3-0 Atlético San Luis

On Wednesday, the coincidences continued. Madrid were 3-0 winners over Celtic in the UEFA Champions League, before América followed suit against Atlético San Luis.

What’s more, both sides scored quickfire doubles in the first 15 minutes after the break. América’s second-half goal burst came in the space of three minutes, Valdés and Martín finding the target for the hosts; for Real, the goals came four minutes apart, through Vinícius and Modric.

Next up for América is a clash with Necaxa on Saturday, while Madrid host Real Mallorca in LaLiga on Sunday. Will there be yet more spooky symmetry? We’ll be watching closely.
