América begin a new golden era: two defeats in the last 25 games

The Liga MX champions continued their good run of form with a win against Querétaro. Since last summer there’s been no one to stop them.

América’s relentless run of form continues. On Saturday night, they recorded their second consecutive victory in the Clausura 2024, beating Querétaro 2-0 at the Azteca and for now, it seems that there is no team that can stop them. Since the start of the previous tournament (Aperura 2023), the Águilas have suffered just two defeats in the last 25 games. Atlético San Luis beat them 0-2 in the second leg of the semi-finals - but the tie had already decided (América won the first leg 0-5); prior to that, their last defeat was against Juárez on the opening day of the Apertura 2023 - a 0-1 defeat on 30 June last year.

Few changes

Another consideration that cannot be overlooked is that out of all the Liga MX clubs, América underwent the fewest changes in the winter transfer window. The team is more or less the same. That’s quite impressive when you take into account that veteran players like Miguel Layún retired, and that several Spanish clubs, among them Betis, were keen to take Álvaro Fidalgo to LaLiga. Coach André Jardine has chosen to give continuity to his squad with the hope of obtaining back-to-back titles. We’ll see if the formula is successful or not.

Jardine’s team are in action again mid-week - another trip to the border, this time against Juárez in a at 9 p.m. kick-off on Wednesday. That will be followed by another away game - against Necaxa in Aguascalientes on Saturday. The first major test will arrive on 3 February, when they host Rayados in the last official game to be played at the Azteca before it is remodelled.
