After their defeat in the semi-final of the Apertura 2022 tournament, Club América have been eliminated for the eleventh time in the play-offs as leaders of the competition in the 17 times they have occupied the position since the 1965-66 season.

Against Toluca, América suffered one of their worst eliminations in memory in Mexican football. The team currently coached by Fernando Ortiz has only managed to be crowned champions of Mexican football on five occasions out of these 16 starting as overall leader. They won titles in 1970-71, 1975-76, 1983-84, 1987-88 and the Apertura 2014.

América have only made it through two of their last 11 play-offs in the Liguilla after losing the first leg. They have been unable to make a comeback in the last decade. With the 3-2 aggregate victory, Toluca have eliminated a Superleader for the first time in the history of Liga MX.

No title since 2014

América have not won a title for eight years occupying the position of overall leader, since the last time they were champions of the competition was in the Apertura 2014 tournament. It took 27 years for América to be crowned champions again in Mexican football from one tournament to the next, dominating the overall lead and that period of drought spanned from the 1987-88 season to the Apertura 2014.

According to MisterChip, the best team in the regular season has only won the title nine times out of a possible 52 (17%).
