Ciudad de México Update:

Talking about Club América’s present can be summed up in one word: crisis. After nine matchdays of the Liga MX Clausura 2026, Las Águilas have managed only 11 points, leaving them ninth in the overall standings and, for now, outside the playoff positions.

Right now, André Jardine’s team is not functioning. The side looks out of rhythm and fans are beginning to lose patience. Even so, there may still be a light at the end of the tunnel. América experienced a very similar situation during the Apertura 2024 campaign and ultimately ended up winning the title, completing a historic three-peat. The similarities between 2024 and 2026 are striking. You could even argue they are following the same “championship pattern.”

Similarities between América in Apertura 2024 and Clausura 2026

In the current Clausura 2026 season, América have 11 points after nine games, placing them ninth in the standings.

In the Apertura 2024 tournament, Las Águilas had 13 points at the same stage, two more than they have now, but were sitting in 10th place. They eventually qualified through the play-in round and went on to defeat Monterrey in the final, securing the third title of the Jardine era.

That season, from matchday 10 to 17, América faced: Pumas, León, Santos, Tijuana, Monterrey, Mazatlán, Pachuca and Toluca.

In 2026, their remaining opponents are: Querétaro, Mazatlán, Pumas, Santos, Cruz Azul, Toluca, León and Atlas, with five of those eight teams also appearing in the closing stretch of that championship run.

More coincidences between the two tournaments fuel hope for América

During the Apertura 2024 season, after nine matchdays the league leaders were Cruz Azul with 22 points. In the current tournament, La Máquina again sit at the top with the same 22 points.

Pumas had 16 points and were fifth in the standings in 2024, exactly the same position and point total they hold in the current campaign.

There are more similarities. At the end of nine matchdays in that title-winning season, the top eight teams were Cruz Azul, Tigres, Monterrey, Toluca, Pumas, San Luis, Chivas and Atlas. In the current standings only one team from that group is missing: San Luis, replaced this time by Pachuca.
