América keeper Tapia to play in the Expansion League
Fernando Tapia, who was the third goalkeeper for the Águilas, joins Venados in the second tier of Mexican soccer.
América’s third goalkeeper, Fernando Tapia, has joined Venados, a team currently playing in the Expansion League.
The Yucatán-based side announced the deal on Friday via social media. Tapia leaves without having made his debut in the Liga MX with the Águilas although he was part of the first team squad since his arrival last summer.
Guillermo Ochoa’s departure to Italy looked like it might open a door of opportunity for Tapía to become the Águilas’ second-choice keeper. However, the board of directors decided to bring in Luis Malagón from Necaxa, which effectively scuppered any possibilities for Tapia to break into the first team this season.
Venados’ goalkeeping coach, Armando Navarrete, a former América player, requested that the club should sign Tapia.
Born in Villahermosa, Tabasco, Tapia is 21 years old. In Yucatan he work under Argentine coach Bruno Marioni. The former América player will have to fight for a place with with first-choice keeper Alejandro Dogre.
