Last night’s defeat to Chivas not only gave América a shock, but also saw them lose one of their star defenders. Right-back Israel Reyes suffered a deep cut to his right leg during the final moments of the game and was taken to hospital. This morning, the Águilas issued a medical report detailing the player’s condition.

Surgery details

Via social media, América confirmed that Reyes underwent surgery after the Clásico Nacional. As of the moment, it is not known when he will be able to return to the field of play. “Club América reports that our player Israel Reyes underwent surgery without complications. The procedure performed included a surgical wash and the repair of an open wound to the right knee. The recovery time will be according to his evolution,” the statement read.

Reyes was forced to leave the field following a collision with Víctor Guzmán which left him with a gaping wound. The player was taken by ambulance to a hospital near the Azteca to be treated. He will miss this Saturday’s Liga MX Clásico Nacional at Akron stadium and possibly could also be dropped from the Mexico squad for next week’s Nations League semi-final against Panama. Reyes had initially been included in the pre-list announced by head coach Jaime Lozano.

Reyes’ injury is a significant loss for América. André Jardine moved him from central defence to right-back in the team’s most recent matches with Kevin Álvarez out recovering from a groin issue. The 23-year-old has done well in that position and now with his injury, the Brazilian coach will once again have to make adjustments at the back. Álvarez has had five starts at right-back but has lacked consistency.
