America says goodbye to Cristian Borja
The Colombian fullback was forced off after a heavy collision and is now a major doubt for América’s playoff run.
América confirmed on Sunday the severity of Cristian Borja’s injury after the game between the Eagles and Pumas UNAM, with the Colombian leaving the field following a heavy blow.
During the play that led to Pumas’ second goal, Borja was involved in a hard collision with Uriel Antuna, suffering an injury to his right knee.
According to América’s medical report, Borja sustained an injury to the collateral ligament in his right knee. The club said his recovery time will depend on how the player progresses.
With the seriousness of the injury now confirmed, everything points to Borja missing at least the rest of the Liga MX playoffs – and possibly the World Cup with his national team.
How has Borja done at América?
The Colombian fullback missed only one game during the Liga MX regular season, with the match against Santos Laguna the only one in which he did not feature.
Since arriving at América, the South American defender has played 84 games, contributing three goals and four assists.
Borja ruled out for the second leg
Borja is, for now, América’s first confirmed absence for the second leg of the quarterfinal against Pumas, which will be played next Sunday at Estadio Olímpico Universitario.
América finished the first leg with a 3-3 draw. Any favorable result would send the Eagles through to the Clausura 2026 semifinals.
