América streak at an end
In this weekend’s Clásico Nacional against Chivas Guadalajara, Club América relinquished a long-running record against their fierce rivals.
After eight long years, Club América’s stranglehold over Chivas in regular-season Liga MX play has finally been broken. In a stunning turn of events, André Jardine’s squad was outplayed by a smart, clinical Guadalajara side that flipped the script in the latest edition of El Clásico Nacional.
When did América last lose to Chivas in the regular season¿
For years, América’s supremacy in the regular season was unquestioned. The Eagles had made a habit of avoiding defeat in Mexico’s most storied rivalry. It took 15 consecutive Clásicos for Chivas to finally notch a win against their fiercest adversary.
The last time América lost a regular-season Clásico was back in February 2017. That match, part of Week 7 of the Clausura 2017, saw Matías Almeyda’s Chivas edge out Ricardo La Volpe’s América. It was a tightly contested affair, but Ángel Zaldívar’s 30th-minute strike proved decisive. That season, Chivas went on to lift the Liga MX trophy, while América endured a forgettable campaign, failing even to qualify for the playoffs.
While Chivas had managed to beat América in playoff matches and in the CONCACAF Champions Cup during this eight-year stretch, regular-season success had eluded them - until Gabriel Milito’s side ended the drought. Heading into the match, Guadalajara was widely seen as the underdog. But once the whistle blew, they showed a different face.
After a balanced first half, Chivas took control in the second. The team from Guadalajara struck with precision, as Roberto Alvarado and Armando González found the back of the net to seal a memorable victory on América’s home turf. The win couldn’t have come at a better time for Chivas, who climbed from third-to-last to 12th place in the standings.
