América’s Alejandro Zendejas aligns European dreams with USMNT not Mexico
The Mexican-American player revealed his desire to go to Europe and hopes that playing for the United States can bring him closer.
After choosing to wear the United States jersey, Mexican-American soccer player Alejandro Zendejas has new objectives in mind and hopes that the USMNT can be used as a catapult to help him achieve them. Making it to a European league is his main goal.
In an interview with Telemundo, the América player acknowledged that his wish since he signed with the Águilas has been to make the leap to the old continent and he believes that to fulfill it choosing the United States over Mexico was the sensible decision.
“Yes, my goal since I arrived at América is to go to Europe. I hope the United States brings me closer... there are many more Americans playing in Europe than Mexicans, so hopefully that will help me to play there,” he explained in a chat with Copán Álvarez.
Zendejas dreams of Germany, the Netherlands or Portugal
Regarding his future in Europe, Zendejas stressed that the Bundesliga, the Eredivisie or the Primeira Liga de Portugal would be where he would like to start his European adventure. That said, he did not close the door to other competitions that may be interested in him in the future.
“Personally I would like to play in Germany, the Netherlands or Portugal. I would prefer those, but if offers come from others I’d go,” added the América player.
Finally, after his call up by Anthony Hudson for the duels against Granada and El Salvador, Zendejas highlighted the extra motivation that has come from chatting with fellow USMNT members who are active in European leagues.
“Here I have spoken with some of those that play in England and the Netherlands and their stories motivate me a lot to get there.”
This is unlikely to go down particularly well with fans of América, but then again, he still has much to prove before the biggest teams come calling.
