América’s injury woes continue to stack up in the Apertura 2023. Luis Malagón and Diego Valdés were the latest cases - both are doubtful for this weekend’s clash with Pumas. Two more additions to the casualty room which takes the Águilas’ tally for the season to eight players who have been injured since the tournament started - a situation which has sounded alarm bells in Coapa.

It is also a situation André Jardine which has had to deal with this since he first arrived at the club. Even before the tournament had started, the América coach already had one player out injured: Jonathan Rodríguez. Cabecita underwent surgery on his right knee at the end of the Clausura 2022 and didn’t reappear until 2 September when he came on as a second half sub in the Clásico Joven victory over Cruz Azul.

Between the Liga MX and Leagues Cup, a total of eight América players have been sidelined at some point through injury. Sebastián Cáceres and Henry Martin were both injured during the bi-national tournament between Liga MX and MLS teams this summer.

Alejandro Zendejas, Israel Reyes and Néstor Araujo also figure in the list of players who have faced time out because of physical problems. Araujo’s case being the most serious as he will miss the remainder of the Apertura 2023 after rupturing the lateral internal ligament in his right knee. Diego Valdés and Luis Malagón are the most recent to spend time on the treatment table - both players are suffering from muscle overload and fatigue, which makes them doubtful for Saturday’s match against Pumas at the Azteca.
