Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti has spoken after his side’s 2-0 win over Athletic Club on Saturday.

“It was a good first half, with a lot of intensity. We kept attacking to score a second and the players were plugged in and motivated. We won a lot of duels because we worked a lot on the defensive aspect,” the Italian said.

Brilliant Bellingham

“We played most of the game with a diamond formation, working well on the wings with Camavinga and Valverde. Bellingham has great quality and is a hard worker.”

Injury to Militao

“He has sprained his knee. It doesn’t look good, we’re going to evaluate it in the next few hours. We are not ruling out anything.”

Rodrygo

Rodrygo opened the scoring with Madrid’s first goal of the 2023-34 campaign.

Ancelotti added: “He is young but he will play more this season. He is an important player, and is a player we can play wide, and is more versatile than Joselu. With him [Joselu] on the field we have to adapt the system a little bit.”

Lunin

“He has done very well, is very calm and very focused. He has played well and hasn’t had many opportunities to show his quality because we have been very solid defensively.”

Kepa

“He’s not a Madrid player. I don’t talk about players who are not Madrid players,” Ancelotti concluded.
