André-Pierre Gignac expected to sign new two-year deal at Tigres
Tigres president Mauricio Culebro has revealed that Gignac, the club’s all-time top scorer, is set to sign a new deal.
French striker André-Pierre Gignac looks set to prolong his stay at Tigres. At least that’s the belief of club president Mauricio Culebro, who confirmed that the player has less than a year left to run on his contract but the offer of a new two-year deal will be put on the table.
“Gignac’s contract ends in December but good news is coming soon. He wants to stay, he feels good here and the plan is for another two years,” Culebro claimed on Mexican TV show La Hora de Willie. The former Marseille attacker signed on for two years, with the option of an additional year if certain conditions were met, in February 2021, taking him up to December 2023. Should he eventually pen another contract extension, he would remain at Tigres until 2026.
How many goals has André-Pierre Gignac scored for Tigres?
It is no secret that the Frenchman’s intention is to finish his career with the Auriazules and the potential new deal would take him over 10 years at the club after he joined in time for the Apertura 2015. And now it appears as if Gignac will play on for longer than was expected. The striker is Tigres’ all-time top goalscorer with 178 goals to his name and the Estadio Universitario faithful will be delighted to see a huge fan favourite extend his stay at the club.
Will Rafael Carioca stay at Tigres?
It means to be seen whether Rafael Carioca will follow in Gignac’s footsteps, however, with the new Liga MX regulation regarding fewer foreign players, which will come into affect in the Apertura 2023, a possible obstacle when it comes to the Brazilian signing a new deal.
“The reduction in the number of foreign players has been confirmed. The restrictions were already in place, they have to be voted on. We are going to take things step by step. As soon as the transfer window closed, the plan was to make no changes to the roster. We’re looking at it. We have to discuss it with the coaching staff,” said Culebro.
