Andrés Guardado: “Atlas turned me down twice”

Guardado has revealed that his dream of retiring in Atlas is not looking promising.

Ciudad de México

Atlas have never been known for having a youth academy from which every season a promising Mexican football player emerges, but the Mexican club can boast of having brought through two giants of Mexican football: Rafael Márquez and Andrés Guardado.

Guardado, in an interview for Star+, the Jalisco-born player admitted that one of his dreams was to finish his career at the club that gave him his first opportunity, but on more than one occasion he has been denied the opportunity.

He went on to add that of all the teams in Mexico’s Primera Division, only one offered him the chance to come and play.

Andrés Guardado made his professional debut with the Atlas in 2005.

Potential Pachuca move

“I told my agent to talk to the teams to see who might be interested, if I fitted in with their plans, and in Mexico there was only one team that opened the doors of their club to me. And I am very grateful for that because it was a response that I didn’t expect and it was one of the ones I least expected. It was from Jesús Martínez [of Pachuca].”

Guardado said that although nothing was formally agreed with Pachuca, he was very grateful to Jesús Martínez, and if things work out, he would love to work with him in the future.
