Andrés Guardado emerged in the Almería penalty area like a titan to score a stunning header that gave Betis a crucial victory in their fight for Europe after two consecutive home defeats. Although he does not enjoy many starts, the Mexican midfielder is once again becoming a key player for Manuel Pellegrini, who sees him as a senior member of the dressing room. Guardado is now in contention to extend his contract with the club.

No one from the club has yet contacted Guardado or his agents about the renewal. He still has offers from both Mexico and Major League Soccer, which has tempted him in a big way in recent years. But his priority is to stay at least another season at Heliópolis, where he feels very much at home. Guardado is one of the captains of the team and continues to play a very important role on the pitch, as evidenced by the almost 1,000 official minutes (996′, to be precise) he has played in 14 LaLiga matches, five Europa League matches and another in the recent Spanish Super Cup held in Saudi Arabia.

Guardado fully focused on club football

In 11 of those 19 official matches, Guardado started 11 games. At 36, 37 in September, the Mexican is being used by Pellegrini this year more than in previous seasons, thanks above all to the fact that he has not picked up any injuries.

Guardado, who recently confirmed his retirement from the Mexico national team with 181 caps and five World Cups under his belt, arrived in Sevilla in 2017 from PSV Eindhoven. In the last two seasons, he has renewed his contract annually. In March 2022, Betis announced a contract renewal that the player hopes will not be his last.
