Andrés Lilini said goodbye to Necaxa this weekend, the team he coached just for the Clausura 2023 tournament. His spell with the Liga MX club ends with his side second from bottom in the standings on 14 points and without reaching the objective to qualify for the playoffs.

Now, everything indicates that the Argentinean will be moving on to a new project coaching Mexico’s national youth teams, although the coach did not want to confirm anything as of yet.

After the Rayos’ 3-0 defeat to Toluca on Sunday, Lillini said goodbye to the Rojiblancos: “This was my last game in Necaxa. With the national team, there is still nothing, but now is the moment when I have to say goodbye to the club. There are things that we didn’t do well. Inside, I feel pain and sadness for not being able to pay the club back for the trust they gave me”.

Next stop, Mexican Federation

While the 48-year-old did not want to confirm anything, everything indicates that, in the coming days, he will be appointed director of youth team soccer at the Mexican Football Federation. His arrival will form part of a series of strategic moves by the FMF that would also include the arrivals of Duilio Davino and Gerardo Espinoza to the coaching staff.

Lillini refused to confirm or deny those reports but did give his opinion on the work that needs to be done as Mexico enters a new process of rebuilding. “If I do move on to a post with the national team, I don’t think the working methods should be be copied from abroad. Mexican players have their own personality and you have to work on that, and focus mainly on having your own identity,” he pointed out.
