Another profitable summer for Real Madrid

Real Madrid rack up three consecutive summers with a positive balance between new signings and sales. Ancelotti confirms that there will be no reinforcements.

Not so long ago, Real Madrid had a reputation for shaking up the transfer market, but in times of economic instability, and facing the titanic costs of remodeling of the Bernabéu, it has become more accustomed to balancing their accounts between signings and sales. This will be the third consecutive summer in which the club’s coffers show a surplus. Before the market closed on 1 September, Ancelotti made the transfer policy clear: “We have a squad with a great deal of resources. If Marco Asensio leaves, we are not going to sign anyone”. Crystal clear. Another topic concerns the possibility that Asensio, Odriozola or Mariano could leave in the next window...

Right now, after the arrivals of Tchouameni (€80M) and Rüdiger (free) and the departures of Casemiro, Mayoral, Kubo, Miguel Gutiérrez, Víctor Chust together with the battalion of free agents (Bale, Jovic, Isco and Marcelo), the balance is positive at just over 12 million euros. The homework was done before the market opened on 1 July, since the deals for Tchouameni and Rüdiger were officially announced on 11 June and 2 July. Shortly after Mbappé changed the panorama with his decision to renew with PSG. An intended signing which would not have affected the accounts as he would have arrived as a free agent.

More than €160 million in the coffers

It was a repeat of what happened in the two previous courses. In 2021-22, Camavinga (€31M) and Alaba (free) arrived, while Varane (€40M) and Ødegaard (€35M) left the balance at +€44M, while Ramos left at zero cost. And in 2020-21, the profits were even greater. Madrid made no new signings but sold Achraf (€43 M), Reguilón (€30 M) and Óscar (€13.5 M), in addition to Javi Sánchez, De Frutos, Soro and Dani Gómez to leave €104.2 M in the war chest. The accounts are healthy and, in addition, trophies have followed...

A net balance, so far, of more than €160 million since 2020, which Ancelotti’s second stint in Madrid has been sweetened by success - LaLiga, Champions League, Spanish and European Super Cups between the triumphant 2021-22 and the start of the current campaign, with five more cups up for grabs on the horizon. If things end up not working out, options will be assessed in the winter market after the World Cup. The objective is to win the coveted Sextuple, and to continue being efficient and effective in the transfer windows to come.
