The Argentine coach Antonio “Turco” Mohamed will become the 13th coach of the Pumas de la UNAM since the last title for the university team was won under the orders of Guillermo Vázquez Jr. in the Clausura 2011 tournament.

Since then, the following managers have tried their best: Joaquín Del Olmo, Antonio Torres Servín, Mario Carrillo, Josė Luis Trejo, Francisco Palencia, Sergio Egea, David Patiño, Bruno Mariano, Michel González, Andrés Lillini and Rafael Puente Jr.

Pumas: the managerial rollcall

Since Guillermo Vázquez led the Pumas to their last championship title in the Clausura 2011, when they defeated Morelia in the grand final, they’ve featured in two finals. They played in the Apertura 2015, again with Vázquez at the helm, where they were beaten by the Tigres, and in the Apertura 2020, under the direction of Andrés Lillini, they were defeated by León, led by Ignacio Ambriz, the current coach of Toluca.

Given this situation, Pumas urgently need to regain the glory of the past, such as those in 1976-77 with the Hungarian coach Jorge Marik, 1980-81 with Bora Milutinovic, 1990-91 with Mejía Barón as coach, the Clausura and Apertura of 2004 with Hugo Sánchez, Clausura 2009 with Ricardo Ferreti, and the seventh and last in the Clausura 2011 with Vázquez.

In addition to these 13 coaches who have led the Pedregal team since 2011, there have been 22 Mexican coaches throughout its history, led by Hugo Sánchez, who won two titles. There have also been four Argentines, two Brazilians, two Hungarians, two Spaniards, and one each from Peru and Serbia.
