Antony to take “period of absence”: When he will return to the Manchester United squad?
Manchester United winger Antony said his former partner’s allegations were “false” in an initial statement.
Manchester United player Antony will not return to Manchester United training or first-team action as he continues to address allegations of assault.
The 23-year-old denies the allegations and is currently under investigation by Brazilian authorities and Greater Manchester Police after his former partner Gabriela Cavallin alleged he assaulted her on different occasions in 2022 and earlier this year.
The United winger said Cavallin’s allegations were “false” in an initial statement, but on Friday he spoke in an interview with Brazilian TV channel SBT, where he denied assaulting any woman.
Antony to take “period of absence”
The Manchester United players who are not on international duty are expected back at the club’s training ground on Monday, however, former Ajax player Antony will take a “period of absence” in what the club and player said was a mutual decision.
A club statement on Sunday afternoon read: “Manchester United acknowledges the allegations made against Antony.
“Players who have not participated in international matches are due back in training on Monday. However, it has been agreed with Antony that he will delay his return until further notice in order to address the allegations.
“As a club, we condemn acts of violence and abuse. We recognise the importance of safeguarding all those involved in this situation, and acknowledge the impact these allegations have on survivors of abuse.”
Antony responds
In the player’s own statement, he said: “I have agreed with Manchester United to take a period of absence while I address the allegations made against me.
“This was a mutual decision to avoid distraction to my teammates and unnecessary controversy for the club.
“I want to reiterate my innocence of the things I have been accused of, and I will fully cooperate with the police to help them reach the truth. I look forward to returning to play as soon as possible.”
Dropped from Brazil squad
It remains to be seen when Antony will be back in action for Manchester United. He has also recently been dropped from the Brazil squad for this month’s international window.
The Old Trafford club paid €95 million plus add-ons ($102m) for the Brazilian forward from Ajax in August 2022. His contract with the Premier League side runs until June 2027.
