WORLD CUP 2022

Argentina excited to have the “real Messi”

Argentina got their redemption when they won their second World Cup game against Mexico on Saturday with none other than Leo Messi scoring the first goal.

For Argentinians, this World Cup is extra special. It could be their last chance to see Lionel Messi, arguably the world’s best soccer player, play for their country in a World Cup. Of course, that makes it exciting for anyone to watch as Messi is beloved by many. But none more than by Argentinians themselves - that is a love that runs deep. You only need to meet one to know it.

So when Argentina lost their opening World Cup game to Saudi Arabia, it was an upset because it was unexpected, sure. But it was an even bigger upset because of what it could mean. If Argentina doesn’t make it out of the group stage, Lionel Messi won’t get his World Cup trophy - the only one missing in his career as a professional soccer player.

Messi’s magic keeps Argentina’s hopes alive

But Argentina got their redemption on Saturday when they won their second Group C game 2-0 over Mexico to keep their round of 16 qualification hopes alive. And of course, it was none other than Lionel Messi who scored the first goal of the game.

The Argentinian fans in Qatar and all over the world got to witness Messi’s magic in the World Cup.

“I’m really, really happy because we saw the real Messi,” said an Argentinian fan after the game. “We were waiting for his reaction [from the first game] and we got it.”

“Thank God we have the number one in the world,” said another fan. “And he always appears when we need him. I’m really happy for the national team. Thank you, Argentina! Thank you, Argentina!
