Argentina vs Croatia: prediction

Croatia have won their last two World Cup matches on penalties, beating Japan and favourites Brazil thanks to the brilliance of goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic.

Argentina also got over the line from the penalty spot, when they defeated the Netherlands in a breathtaking clash on Friday.

You can only admire what Croatia have done in recent years. They reached the 2018 final before losing to Didier Deschamps’ France side, who could also reach this year’s final. Croatia will be confident of advancing to another final after beating Brazil but will have to deal with the enormous threat of Lionel Messi.

Messi, who has scored four World Cup goals in Qatar, could be the difference on the day, as he aims to win the World Cup for the first time. He was inspired by Louis van Gaal’s pre-match comments in the quarter-final clash with the Netherlands and showed exactly why you should never doubt him.

Argentina, supported by a large Argentinian contingent in Qatar, should prevail in this one, despite the brilliance of Luka Modric and Croatia’s fighting spirit.

Prediction: Argentina 2-0 Croatia
