Argentina arrived in Qatar with many tipping Lionel Scaloni’s men to win the country’s first World Cup since 1986, but the Albiceleste were on the end of one of the biggest upsets in tournament history on matchday one.

However, it’s worth noting that the Mexicans do not have a good recent record against Argentina. They have lost seven and won none of the teams’ last 10 meetings, last beating the Argentinians back in 2004.
Coached by Argentine Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino, Mexico kicked off their campaign in Qatar with a goalless draw against Poland. As has regularly been the case at the World Cup over the years, goalkeeper Guillermo ‘Memo’ Ochoa was the hero for El Tri, saving a second-half Robert Lewandowski penalty to ensure the North Americans earned a point at Stadium 974.

If the Saudi Arabia result has taught us anything, it’s that football isn’t always the most prediction-friendly of sports. But unless Argentinian heads have completely gone, Messi and Co ought to be able to see off a not terribly impressive Mexico side that has won only one of its last four - and that was against Iraq.
