Argentina’s three possible lineups for World Cup final against France

Argentina take on France in the final on Sunday in what has been one of the best ever World Cups.

Lionel Scaloni’s side haven’t faced an attacking threat like France at the 2022 World Cup and will have to be at their best if Lionel Messi is to lift the Jules Rimet trophy on Sunday evening.

Argentina suffered a group-stage opening defeat to Saudi Arabia but head coach Scaloni quickly made changes to his team and they haven’t looked back.

The goals have come from all over the pitch. Nahuel Molina, Alexis Mac Allister, Enzo Fernández and Julián Álvarez are some of the names to have found the back of the net as La Albiceleste made their way to the final in Qatar.

As inexperienced international players, Mac Allister, Fernández and Álvarez have come of age on the greatest stage and produced at the perfect time. We have taken a look at how Scaloni could set his team up for the World Cup final this weekend.

Argentina XI vs France: Possible teams

Team 1 (5-3-2)

Martínez; Molina, Romero, Otamendi, Martínez, Acuña; De Paul, Fernández, Mac Allister; Messi, Álvarez.

Five at the back would be a more conservative approach as Argentina look to double up on Kylian Mbappé and nullify the threat he offers on France’s left.

Having an extra man at the back would mean dropping Leandro Paredes in midfield and starting Lisandro Martínez alongside Nicolás Otamendi and Cristian Romero.

Marcos Acuña, who missed the semi-final through suspension could replace Nicolás Tagliafico in this system to offer more of an attacking threat down the left.

Team 2 (4-4-2)

Martínez; Molina, Romero, Otamendi, Tagliafico; De Paul, Fernández, Paredes, Mac Allister; Messi, Álvarez.

An extra man in midfield would enable La Albiceleste to keep a closer eye on Antoine Griezmann, who has been superb for France in the tournament.

Team 3 (4-3-3)

Martínez; Molina, Romero, Otamendi, Tagliafico; De Paul, Fernández, Mac Allister; Di María, Messi, Álvarez.

A 4-3-3 formation could see the inclusion of Ángel Di María who has missed parts of the tournament through injury. Messi would operate in a deeper role to support the midfield with Julián Álvarez as the focal point in attack.

It will be an intriguing battle on Sunday as both sides go head-to-head to make it into the history books. France would become only the third side ever to retain the World Cup. Argentina, on the other, have been waiting since 1986.
