Argentinian giants chase Cruz Azul star
River Plate is reportedly eyeing a move for Cruz Azul’s 21-year-old starlet Luka Romero, who has already had a spell abroad in Europe.
If it’s not Boca Juniors, it’s River Plate. Journalist Adrián Esparza Oteo has revealed that Los Millonarios have asked about Cruz Azul’s attacking midfielder Luka Romero. For now, it appears to be only an initial inquiry, but the interest from the storied Argentinian club is very real.

Boca has a history of changing Cruz Azul’s plans by “wooing” key players away. Two notable examples are Iván Marcone and Guillermo “Pol” Fernández.
At the time, the Mexican club’s front office didn’t hesitate to support those South American players’ dreams - dreams that, much like many Mexican players, often revolve around testing themselves in Europe. By now, it’s no surprise that major clubs want Liga MX talent; the real issue is whether they’re willing to pay a fair price rather than offering three seeds, two bottle caps, and a nickel.
Who is Luka Romero?
Romero was born in Durango, Mexico, to an Argentine father. He spent time with major clubs in Europe - most notably AC Milan and Mallorca - but never fully broke through. He’s now in his third short tournament in Liga MX, where he has appeared in 31 regular‑season matches and scored four goals. He also lifted the 2025 CONCACAF Champions Cup with Cruz Azul.
The 21-year-old made his Liga MX debut on January 25, 2025, for Cruz Azul against Puebla. Now River has set its sights on him, a player who gives Los Celestes valuable minutes as a young contributor but has yet to secure a regular starting role for a team currently playing its home matches at Puebla’s Estadio Cuauhtémoc.
