ASIAN CUP
Asian Cup 2023: full schedule, fixtures, teams, kick-off times
The 18th edition of the AFC Asian Cup kicks off in Doha (Qatar) on 12 January with the host nation looking to defend their title.
24 nations will compete in the 2023 Asian Cup set to be staged in Qatar with the original tournament having to be pulled from China following Covid-19 complications.
The action gets underway in Doha as Qatar face Lebanon in the opener with nine of the 2022 World Cup stadiums to be used for the competition which commences on 12 January and winds up with the final on 10 February with the winner set to be crowned at Lusail’s impressive 88,000 capacity stadium.
At the outset of the competition, Japan, Korea Republic, Iran and Saudi Arabia are the pre-tournament favourites with current holders Qatar struggling as they enter a phase of reconstruction under new coach Bartolomé “Tintín” Márquez following a poor showing at the World Cup.
The top two sides in each of the six groups will advance to the Round of 16 and will be joined by four of the best placed third placed teams. The competition then follows a direct knock-out format through to the 10 February final where the champion of Asia will be crowned at Lusail Stadium, the same vene where Lionel Messi lifted the World Cup on 18 December 2022 following Argentina’s dramatic win over France.
