Astonishing scenes in Naples after Napoli win the Scudetto

The city of Naples in southern Italy is embarking on a celebration unseen for decades. On Thursday evening a 1-1 draw against Udinese crowned Napoli as the Serie A champions for the first time since 1989/90, since the days of Diego Maradona.

Only twice before has Napoli won the Italian league, both coming during the glorious Maradona-inspired spell from 1984 to 1992.

At the start of this season there were very few in Italy who believed that Luciano Spalletti’s side could mount a realistic title charge. Club stalwarts Dries Mertens, Kalidou Koulibaly and Lorenzo Insigne all left last summer and there was precious little money made available to buy replacements.

And yet, with five games of the season still to play, Napoli have won the title in incredible fashion. Their fate has been clear for some time now but their triumph was mathematically confirmed in Udine on Thursday. Napoli went a goal down but Serie A top scorer Victor Osimhen was on hand to level the match and put them on track for the title.

The club held a watch event in the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona and fans went wild after the Nigerian’s equaliser.

The northeastern city of Udine may be at the far end of the country, but there was a huge Naples presence in the stadium for the game. As soon as the full time whistle was blown the Napoli faithful flooded onto the pitch to begin the celebrations.

Back in Naples, the party is just getting started. On the full time whistle fireworks were set off across the city and a drone was able to capture stunning footage of the scene in Naples tonight.

Down on the ground the scene is just as spectacular as residents have taken to the streets to celebrate. Even in a country as football-obsessed as Italy, Naples is known as a particular hotbed of footballing fanaticism.

As well as the flares and fireworks, Naples has also been taking over by the beeping of moped horns. After the last-minute victory over Juventus last month an army of supporters on mopeds followed the team bus to welcome the players back to the city.

It looks like the mopeds are out again in Naples, but this time they are part of a Scudetto celebration for the first time in more than three decades.
