Athletic Club vs Barcelona summary: score, goals, highlights | Spanish Super Cup 2025
Athletic 0-2 Barça: Spanish Super Cup semi-final as it happened
Peep peep peeep! Barcelona are deservedly through to Sunday’s final.
Athletic may have had the ball in the net twice late on - with both goals disallowed - but they have been outplayed today.
Goals by Gavi and Lamine Yamal send Barça through to a weekend date with either Real Madrid or Real Mallorca, back at King Abdullah Sports City.
It's been a good night all round for Barça, who have learned that they will now be able to re-register Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor. For the moment, at least.
Madrid and Mallorca face off in the second Super Cup semi-final tomorrow, at 2:00 p.m. ET/11:00 a.m. PT. Be sure to join my colleague Roddy Cons for live-text coverage of that game.
Thanks for reading - bye!
From the left, Pedri skims a lovely, outside-of-the-boot ball into Raphinha's run in behind the Athletic defence.
Raphinha tries to take it around Simón, but the goalkeeper grabs hold of the ball!
A big chance for Barcelona to add a third.
There'll be seven minutes of time added on.
A couple of moments ago, De Jong almost scored a third for Barcelona. With Simón out of his goal, De Jong receives the ball from Ferran on the penalty spot. The Dutchman turns it towards goal, but Paredes clears from on the line!
Goal disallowed!
Hmm. There's a long VAR check, and De Jong's bacon is saved. At the heart of the question is: did Djaló get his boot to De Jong's ball on its way through to Williams?
To be clear: Williams was behind the last defender when the ball was played towards him, but if Djaló didn't redirect De Jong's pass, the Athletic striker can't be deemed offside. In the end, it's decided Djaló's involvement does mean Williams is off. He gets enough of a touch on the ball to change its course.
Goal! Athletic 1-2 Barcelona - Iñaki Williams pulls one back!
Receiving a wayward pass by De Jong, Williams races into the Barcelona box and finishes low into the far corner.
It's a cool, low finish past Szczesny.
Is there still time for an Athletic comeback?
Oh, nearly. De Jong flicks through a ball in behind the Athletic defence, with Ferran giving chase. Simón races off his line to get there just before the Barça youngster.
More changes. Balde and Casadó are off for Barcelona, with Gerard Martín and Eric García on in their stead.
De Marcos has the ball into the net for Athletic... but the flag is up! It was a nice goal, too.
Receiving the ball with his back to goal, Nico Williams twists and prods a sweet little ball into De Marcos' run into the Barça box. The right-back's first touch isn't amazing, but he nonetheless gets there in time to dink the ball over Szczesny and into the net.
De Marcos is ruled offside, though, and replays show he was. A VAR check backs up the initial call.
Athletic replace Unai Gómez with Álvaro Djaló.
On the left, Athletic work it to Nico Wiliams. He lays it across the top of the box to Vesga, who unsuccessfully tries to help it on out to the right wing. Martínez cuts it out for Barcelona.
Lamine Yamal now has as many goals this term as he scored all last season, Opta notes.

Serrano shoots for Athletic, but it's not a tough one for Szczesny.
A moment ago, Koundé was also booked, for a push I think it was. I must confess I missed the incident.
Unai Gómez is booked for a rather nasty challenge on Cubarsí.
He catches the defender with a studs-up challenge into the shin, but escapes any punishment beyond the booking.
Indeed. Gavi is off for Frenkie de Jong, while Lewandowski is replaced by Ferran Torres.
For Athletic, Nico Serrano is on for Berenguer.
Gavi is down, having apparently twanged a muscle. He seems to be saying he can continue, but Hansi Flick looks to be preparing a couple of changes, and the young Spaniard may well be one of the players withdrawn.
For the first time, Athletic work it left to Nico Williams to run at his man.
Williams cuts inside, drifting past Koundé and Fermín, but his shot is a bit of a trundler. It bobbles into Szczesny's arms.
Midway point of the second half in Jeddah. Unless Athletic find a couple more gears at the very least, Barça are poised to sail into this weekend's final.
Nico Williams gathers his brother's low ball into the box, but can't lay it off for a team-mate to shoot.
A moment later, Iñaki tries to cut it back from the byline for Nico, who is waiting on the penalty spot. He can't find him, and it is moot in any case. The flag is up for offside.
Right away, Vesga stings Szczesny's palms. The midfielder connects with a bouncing ball just outside the Barça box, and gets plenty of power behind his strike. It's far too central, though, and doesn't represent too taxing a save for the keeper.
Both coaches shuffle their pack, and Nico Williams is on for Athletic.
Valverde makes a triple change: Prados, Lekue and Guruzeta, for De Marcos, Vesga and Nico.
For Barça, Lamine Yamal is off for Fermín López.
Close-ish from Raphinha.
Barcelona pop it about for a minute or so, before the Brazilian bursts into the Athletic box on the left. He sends a sort of cross-cum-shot towards Simón's left-hand post, and it drifts only a yard or so wide.
And a moment later, Barça again create an opening that almost leads to a third.
Charging forward down the left, Balde zips a low ball into the Athletic area, where Jauregizar has to look alive to sweep it away. Had he not, Lamine Yamal was waiting at the back post.
Can Athletic respond by pulling one back quickly?
Berenguer delivers a corner from the left, but it's played behind for another.
At the second attempt, Berenguer knocks it short before clipping a lovely cross over to the far post, but Barça deal with it.
Barcelona have now scored 78 goals in all competitions this season, per Opta. That's more than any other club in Europe's top five leagues, the stats specialists say.

Blimey. Right away, Lewandowski almost turns it home for a third.
Raphinha gets to the left-hand byline and cuts it back for the Pole, but he slices wide from six yards out!
Goal! Athletic 0-2 Barcelona - Lamine Yamal makes it two!
It's been a really rather comfy night for Barça, who are now two to the good.
When Athletic fail to bring the ball out from the back, Gavi clips a precise ball into Lamine's run into the box. His first touch is perfect, and - with acres of space around him - the teenager prods it past Simón and into the net!
A long way back for Athletic now.
Berenguer picks up the first yellow card of the night.
On the right, Lamine Yamal bamboozles Yuri and sets off towards the byline. Berenguer brings Lamine's forward progress to an abrupt halt with a clear shoulder barge, and goes into the book.
Now it's Raphinha's turn to cut inside and shoot, this time from the left.
Running onto Martínez's long pass, Raphinha takes an excellent first touch to breeze by Vivian, but his shot is too weak. Simón gathers without too much fuss.
Right away, Lamine Yamal cuts inside from the right and wraps his left boot around a curling shot.
It's a move reminiscent of his wonderful goal for Spain in this summer's Euro 2024 semi-final against France. Unlike that evening in Munich, though, Lamine is off target. The ball flashes a yard or two past the post.
Peeeep! The second 45 is go.
No half-time substitutions for either team.
Second half imminent
The players are just emerging back on to the field, and we're about to get the second half underway.
Joyful Joan after Olmo, Víctor ruling
Judging by these images aired by the TV program El Chiringuito, Barça president Joan Laporta is cock-a-hoop about that National Sports Council ruling.
A reminder that the government body says Barça can provisionally re-register Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor, as it looks further into the case.

Ahead of Los Blancos' matchup with Mallorca, Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti spoke to reporters in Jeddah today.
He offered his thoughts on the Super Cup being played in Saudi Arabia.
A reminder that Real Madrid face Real Mallorca in tomorrow's second Spanish Super Cup semi-final. You'll be able to follow live-text commentary of that game here at AS USA.
If you'd like to know how you can watch the last-four clash on TV or online, then let me point your in the direction of our guide on where to tune in.
Peeep peeep peeeeep! Barcelona lead at the break.
Athletic showed some signs of life in the final period of that first half, but Barça fully deserve their lead.
And just as I say that, the Basques create a very presentable opportunity to level.
Yuri is released into space on the left, apparently beating the offside trap. He pings a low ball into the middle towards Williams, who only has Szczesny to beat... but he slightly scuffs his effort. The keeper blocks.
There'll be one minute of time added on.
Athletic have had one or two decent-ish moments in the past few minutes, but in general this has been a pretty comfortable half for Barcelona.
On the right-hand side of the Barça area, Williams flicks the ball on to Unai Gómez. Gómez can't do anything with it, but Athletic come again at Barça.
Receiving Berenguer's pinpoint pass on the corner of the box, Williams doesn't need a second invitation to thump the bouncing ball towards goal. He sends his strike just too high, though; it flies a yard or two over the crossbar.
Szczesny bounds off his line once more, but this time he gets it right. The Pole heads away a high ball delivered to the edge of the Barcelona penalty area.
Again Simón plays with fire in front of his goal. Controlling a ball with his feet, he lets it squirm between his legs and behind him, with Raphinha waiting to take it off him.
Simón survives the scare, but that's now his second.
Super Cup specialist
Spanish stats guru Mister Chip notes that Gavi has either scored or assisted four of Barcelona's last seven goals in the Spanish Super Cup.

Szczesny does rather better here.
Yuri charges forward down the left and fizzes a low ball into the area, right down the corridor of uncertainty. Guruzeta is waiting in the middle for a tap-in, but the Barcelona keeper is alive to the danger. He leaps off his line to grab the ball before it can reach the Athletic forward.
There's a good shooting chance for Jauregizar, but he blazes it over! He had a decent amount of space just outside the Barcelona box, but couldn't keep it down. Casadó did well to put him off.
Oh, my. Szczesny almost lays a goal on a silver platter for Iñaki Williams.
As the Athletic forward chases down a long ball from the back, the Barça goalkeeper rather rashly charges off his line to meet him outside his area. He's second to the ball, but Williams doesn't have time to turn the ball into the empty net. Szczesny recovers to divert the ball behind for a corner.
Gavi glee
Gavi celebrates opening the scoring for Barcelona.
Athletic knock it from side to side for a good minute or two, without really getting anywhere.
Finally, Paredes tries to lift a ball into Guruzeta's run towards the Barcelona box, but it's too long. Szczesny trots off his line to gather it.
I make that Gavi goal his first for Barcelona since he scored against Antwerp in the Champions League back in September 2023. He missed much of the intervening period with an ACL injury, of course.
That's a fine chance for Barcelona to score a second!
Paredes gets himself in a muddle, and suddenly Barça are streaming towards Simón's box in numbers.
Lamine feeds Raphinha into the area, but he can't beat the goalkeeper. The loose ball falls right to Lamine, who has space to pick his spot - but he tries an impudent dink over Simón! He doesn't pull it off; he succeeds only in plopping the ball right into the keeper's arms.
A moment after that Gavi goal, by the way, Simón almost gifted Barça a second.
Playing the ball out from the back, he knocked it straight off Lewandowski - but the ricochet bounced safely behind.
Having fallen behind, Athletic create their best chance so far.
Released into space on the right-hand side of the box, Iñaki Williams almost has too much time to think about what to do next.
With three players waiting for a ball into the middle, Williams dallies and dallies, before playing it right to a green and white shirt. A waste.
Goal! Athletic 0-1 Barcelona - Gavi gives Barça the lead!
It's a very nicely worked goal.
Raphinha spins just inside the Athletic half, before feeding it to Pedri. He carries it forward to the edge of the Athletic box, and slips a pass left to Balde.
Balde's low ball into the area is right to Gavi, who prods it underneath Simón and into the net.
That was a nice idea from Raphinha, but he doesn't get the execution quite right.
Receiving the ball on the left, deep inside the Athletic half, he tries to curl a bouncing ball into the path of Lewandowski, who has peeled off to the right and set off towards the box.
Raphinha's pass splits the Athletic defence in two, but is too close to Simón.
Back come Athletic, until Jauregizar loses it to Lamine Yamal.
The Barça youngster scuttles forward down the right wing, before Jauregizar tugs him to the floor.
Athletic enjoy a prolonged spell of possession. I make that their first of any real length so far.
Finally, the Basques look for Guruzeta's run into the right-hand channel, but Szczesny is off his line to clear.
Some 15 yards or so outside the Athletic box, Raphinha is tripped.
He picks himself up to take the free-kick, in the left-hand channel - and almost surprises Simón! It's a decent way out, but instead of delivering into the middle, Raphinha tries to squeeze a shot inside the near post.
Simón has to scamper across his line to parry!
Lamine Yamal pops the ball back to Pedri with a neat back flick, drawing purrs of approval from the crowd. It's clear that he's the main attraction for the locals.
Pedri tries to sweep a first-time ball in behind the Athletic defence to find Raphinha's run forward, but it's just too long for the Brazilian.
Athletic, who have barely had a sniff of the ball thus far, win a free-kick deep on the left.
Can Berenguer deliver a dangerous ball into the area?
No. No, he cannot. It flies past everyone and behind for a goal-kick.
Having been provided with an early chance, Koundé now lays one on.
Whipping in a fine cross from the right, the Frenchman pings the ball right onto the left boot of Raphinha. He can't keep his volley down, though!
A couple of early openings for Barcelona.
Barça then take charge of the ball... and immediately, Lamine Yamal gets the decibels rising inside King Abdullah Sports City.
The teenager plays a lovely little pass into the box to locate the forward run of Koundé, who has space to shoot from an angle. He can't beat Simón.
A moment later, Lewandowski tries to wriggle his way into shooting space just inside the Athletic area, but his strike is blocked.
Athletic make the first attempt to carve out an attack of substance, seeking out the forward run of Lekue on the right wing. Prados's ball out the flank is overhit, though, and it will be a throw-in for Barcelona.
Peeeep!
The referee has to resolve some sort of technical glitch with his headset... and we're off!
Out come the teams!
The 22 players are now out on the field in Jeddah, and have just engaged in the pre-match handshake.
Just a couple of minutes until kick-off.
Last look at the line-ups!
The two teams are about to emerge from the tunnel at King Abdullah Sports City, where the fans in the stands are being treated to a pre-game fireworks display.
Here's a final reminder of the two confirmed line-ups:
Athletic Club
Simón, Lekue, Vivian, Paredes, Yuri, Jauregizar, Prados, Iñaki Williams, Unai Gómez, Berenguer and Guruzeta.
Barcelona
Szczesny, Koundé, Íñigo Martínez, Cubarsí, Balde, Pedri, Casadó, Gavi, Lamine Yamal, Raphinha and Lewandowski.
Who is today's referee? Who is the VAR?
The match referee in Jeddah will be Miguel Ángel Ortiz Arias.
In the VAR booth, meanwhile, will be Valentín Pizarro Gómez.
Lamine layoff at an end
This rather talented young man, by the way, makes his first Barça start since December 15, having missed the team's last two games with an ankle issue.
Having shaken off that injury, he's straight back in.
What the coaches said: Ernesto Valverde, Athletic Club
Memories of last game as Barça coach in Jeddah:
“I was talking about it in the car earlier. I know my last game as Barça boss was here, but I don’t have any particular thoughts about it. It happened and I’m happy where I am. I really have no particular thoughts about that. Honestly.”
Will the lack of extra time affect the game?
“In the final minutes, it’s possible. It depends which team is fresher at that point. When there was talk of the possibility [of eliminating extra time in the Super Cup], we thought it was a good idea, as it can help to reduce the strain placed on players’ bodies.”
Athletic could win three trophies this season:
“In 40 years, we’ve won three trophies. Our aim is to try to win this one that’s in front of us. And then the others, [we’ll try to win them] too. But right now we’re not thinking about this being a season where we win a treble. The likes of Barça and Madrid, I imagine they are. But we’re just focusing on tomorrow’s game.”
Valverde revisits venue of final Barça game
Athletic boss Ernesto Valverde - who, by the way, is hands-down the LaLiga coach I’d most like to have a beer with - is up against his former club tonight. I’m sure I didn't need to remind you of that fact.
What might have escaped your notice, though, is that today’s game is being played on the scene of his very last match as Barça boss, almost five years ago to the day.
Four days after King Abdullah Sports City was the venue for Barça's 3-2 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup semi-finals on January 9, 2020, Valverde was sacked by the Blaugrana.
In two and a half years as Camp Nou head coach, he led Barça to two LaLiga titles, a Copa del Rey and a Spanish Super Cup.
Extra time eliminated
Having reminded you of a couple of recent extra-time wins for Athletic over Barça, I should point out that there is no chance of that happening in Jeddah today.
That's because there will be no additional 30 minutes at this season’s Spanish Super Cup. If games are level at the end of normal time, they will go straight to penalties.
What is Athletic and Barcelona's recent H2H record?
Athletic and Barcelona have met once so far this season, in August in LaLiga. Barça came out on top, winning 2-1 thanks to goals by Lamine Yamal and Robert Lewandowski.
However, it should be noted that Athletic beat the Blaugrana in the Copa del Rey this time last year, securing a 4-2 extra-time win on their way to lifting their first major trophy since 1984.
My colleague Joe Brennan has put together this full report on the latest in the Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor situation.
A reminder, ICYMI: Spain's National Sports Council has ruled that Barça can provisionally re-register the pair, as the body looks into their case.
What the coaches said: Hansi Flick, Barcelona
Athletic test:
“To play against Athletic Bilbao is always difficult. It’s a very good team with very good players. They have a good philosophy. They have good players playing one-against-one, very fast players. The transition they make, they really do it great.”
Performances:
“The last match against Atlético was - I said it in the press conference - it was a really good match. The only thing was that we lost it. This is why we are sad about that, but the way we played was really good, and this is our focus."
Raphinha’s remarks:
“What I can say is that I have confidence in the club. When I know this club and when I know what happens here and how great the club is and how great the team is, all the people around, I love everything in Barcelona. So I would say, ‘come on’ and sign the contract, I would do that. I have no doubts about that.”
Athletic’s last five results

Dec 21: Osasuna 1-2 Athletic (LaLiga)
Dec 15: Alavés 1-1 Athletic (LaLiga)
Dec 11: Fenerbahce 0-2 Athletic (UEL)
Dec 8: Athletic 2-0 Villarreal (LaLiga)
*Athletic won on penalties
Athletic on growing undefeated sequence
There's no doubt about it, Athletic are the form team of tonight’s two semi-finalists.
Although the Basques needed penalties to beat fourth-tier Logroñés in the Copa del Rey on Saturday, Ernesto Valverde sent out a much-rotated team.
In LaLiga, Athletic have won five out of the last six and are fourth, just two points behind Barça. In all competitions, moreover, they're on a run of 15 games unbeaten.
Barça in garish change kit today
Barcelona, by the way, will be wearing this fluorescent number at King Abdullah Sports City.
I don't know about you, but that vertical Nike swoosh is yet to win me over.

What is Athletic's Spanish Super Cup record?
As for Athletic, they have lifted the Spanish Super Cup on three occasions.
Like Barça, Los Leones have won the Super Cup once since its recent revamp - and it was the Catalans that they beat in the final. Iñaki Williams scored the winner in the third minute of extra time, as Athletic ran out 3-2 winners in Seville 2021.
That's the only year that the four-team Super Cup hasn’t been held in Saudi Arabia (and it was only kept in Spain because of covid-19).

What is Barcelona's Spanish Super Cup record?
Barcelona are 14-time Spanish Super Cup winners, but have only won the event once since it became a four-team tournament.
That sole triumph in the expanded Super Cup came in 2023, when the Catalans saw off arch rivals Real Madrid 3-1 in the final.
Madrid got their revenge in last year's Super Cup final, though, inflicting a 4-1 Clásico thumping on the Blaugrana.

Barcelona's form far from first-class
Off-field issues aside, Barça’s on-field fortunes haven’t been wonderful of late.
Hansi Flick’s men head into the Super Cup third in LaLiga, five points off the top. They were the initial pacesetters in this season's Spanish top flight, but have now won only once in their last seven in the league.
That run includes defeats in their last two LaLiga outings.
Raphinha rails at Barça's off-field situation
Barça's 'registration-gate' led to some fairly eye-catching comments from Olmo and Víctor's team-mate Raphinha yesterday.
Asked by reporters whether the uncertainty affects the rest of the Barça squad, the Brazilian said: "Yes - I can’t tell you that it doesn’t: I’d be lying to you, and I don’t like lying.
"If I were at another club, seeing the situation that Pau and Dani are in, I’d maybe be wondering whether this is the best place for me to be.”
Breaking: CSD allows Barça to register Olmo and Víctor
We have news hot off the press about the 'Olmo affair' - which, out of deference to poor Pau Víctor, we should really be calling the 'Olmo-Víctor affair', shouldn't we.
Having been told by LaLiga and the Spanish Football Federation that they couldn't re-register the pair, Barça took their case to Spain's National Sports Council (CSD).
The CSD, it has just emerged, has said that Barça can provisionally register Olmo and Víctor while the body looks into the case.
That appears to mean they'll be available for this weekend's final, if Barça get there.
Just three Athletic players keep place in team
Athletic boss Valverde has made no fewer than eight changes to the second string team that squeaked past lowly Logroñés in the Copa del Rey at the weekend.
Unai Simón, Íñigo Lekue, Dani Vivian, Yuri Berchice, Mikel auregizar, Beñat Prados, Iñaki Williams and Unai Gómez all come back into the Basques' team.
Star man Nico Williams, who was a prime target for Barça over the summer, is on the bench. He's been struggling with ankle injury.

Barcelona left red-faced by ‘Olmo affair’
Barcelona have travelled to Saudi Arabia with Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor - but as things stand, neither is allowed to play.
That's because LaLiga’s salary-cap rules prevented Barça from maintaining the pair's registration before a December 31 deadline passed. That means Olmo, a €60 million summer signing, and Víctor, a highly promising youth product, are ineligible to feature for Hansi Flick.
Since missing the deadline the club has failed to persuade either LaLiga or the Spanish Football Federation to allow them to re-register either player, despite boosting their coffers with the sale of VIP boxes in the new Camp Nou.
Bumpy times at Barcelona
Barcelona head into the Super Cup on the back of a big win, having thumped Barbastro 4-0 in the Copa del Rey at the weekend.
Aside from that demolition of fourth-tier minnows, though, the Catalans are on a fairly ropey run of form. What's more, the club is in the midst of an exceedingly embarrassing off-the-field hoo-ha.
Who awaits in the Spanish Super Cup final?
Athletic Club and Barcelona are vying for the right to face one of Real Madrid or Real Mallorca in Sunday's final.
The Super Cup's second semi-final, which pits the reigning LaLiga champions against the Copa del Rey runners-up, takes place tomorrow and also kicks off at 2:00 p.m. ET/11:00 a.m. PT.
All three games are to be held at Jeddah's King Abdullah Sports City stadium.
