Goals. Mistakes. Comebacks. A sensational rollercoaster. Two teams that were looking for victory as their only objective. Two clubs that remembered what the Clásico Tapatío is all about. It was an emotional encounter that took place on Saturday night at the Jalisco Stadium, Chivas having the advantage before Atlas came from behind to share the spoils. In the end, the victory could have gone either way.

All square in the Clásico Tapatío

As the dust settled on the excitement and drama of the 3-3 draw we were able to reflect on what had come before.

Chivas kicked off their match with a bang, taking control of the game just seconds after the whistle blew. Within the first minute of the match, Alexis Vega sent a deep pass to Cristian Calderón, who was left wide open inside the box. Calderón unleashed a powerful left-footed effort that narrowly missed the post. It was a warning shot that set the early tone.

Just moments after, Carlos Alvarado sent a long ball down the right flank, finding Roberto Alvarado who quickly accelerated towards the box. Ronaldo Cisneros made a run towards the center of the box, looking to receive the pass from Alvarado, but it was the experienced winger who opened the scoring. Camilo Vargas was helpless in the Atlas goal. Just three minutes had elapsed.

The early goal was a perfect start for Chivas, but it also proved to be a double-edged sword. The team retreated too far back into their own half, allowing Atlas to take control of the game. The Rojinegros launched wave after wave of attacks at the Chivas defense, with Luis Reyes, Diego Barbosa, and Ozziel Herrera all coming close to scoring.

But Chivas weathered the storm and found their rhythm once again, thanks in part to a moment of brilliance from Carlos Cisneros. The winger received the ball on the right wing, cut inside, and unleashed a low shot that bounced awkwardly in front of Vargas before nestling into the far corner of the net. It was a stunning goal that had the Jalisco Stadium on its feet. Half an hour played.

But just moments later, their lead would be halved, Julián Quiñones scoring for Atlas and that would be followed with the final play of the first half by Jonathan Herrera levelling the game as the teams went in for some managerial advice.

A blistering start to the second half saw Ernesto Vega restore Chivas’ advantage only for Quiñones to cancel it out two minutes later. Vega had not scored against Atlas in four years and his passionate celebrations saw him shown a yellow card by the referee.

The remaining half hour or so of the game was tense and hard fought but neither defense would be breached again. The 3-3 draw may be remembered for some time but it was a result that didn’t do with team much good. Chivas moved to 22 points and, for the time being, in sixth place on the table. Atlas now have 13 points and sit in 11th place.
