Atlético Madrid - Real Madrid: Madrid derby, as it happened

Spoils shared in tense Madrid derby

as.com

Difficult to know where to start in wrapping up a game of football that became a backdrop to a depressing scene as the game was suspended for 15 minutes after Real Madrid keeper Courtois was subjected to a flurry of objects being thrown from the south stand causing the referee to act accordingly.

So, the game... After a tense first 45 minutes, Militao opened the scoring for the visitors and soon after the game was suspended.

After the restart, Ateti finally found a sense of rhythm and as Madrid sat deep, Correa bundled the ball into the net and after a check by the automatic offside system, the goal was awarded with the match ending 1-1.

As for the incidents, both LaLiga and Atletico Madrid need to take action and take measures to ensure that those responsible are singled out and are denied access to the Metropolitano in the futre.

Simeone pleads with Atleti fans

as.com

The image that seems to be creating a significant talking point is Atleti coach Simeone pleading with the hardcore fans and appeasing for calm ...'pensemos' (think calmly) he kept saying ...

as.com

Atleti captain Koke

The Atletico Madrid captain was speaking to DAZN post game and claimed that after the game panned out he was satisfied with the point and hoped that the club would not be punished as a result of the actions of 'four fools'.

as.com
as.com

The final whistle sounds and that is the end of a Madrid derby that ends all square but was somewhat overshadowed by the 15 minute suspension after some Atleti fans deemed it accepatble to launch a series of objects at Courtois.

as.com

Now a clash of heads in the box as Le Normand and Aurélien Tchouaméni collide.

This does not look good as the Madrid player is the first to get up.

as.com

Llorente off.

as.com

VAR have called and Llorente could be red carded for that challenge.

Yes, its red .... Llorente is off and Atleti have to play the final 30 or so seconds with ten men.

as.com

Another card, this time Llorente who crashes into Garcia.

as.com

Late, late drama in the San Blas area of Madrid with just a minute to go and it looks like both sides will preserve their unbeaten record.

as.com
as.com

The goal stands !

The automatic offside camera intervenes and awards the goal.

The stadium erupts.

as.com

VAR and the automatic offside camera will review.

Correa was the man who bundled the ball into the net.

as.com

Goooool

No, the flag is up and it won't count as the flag is up.

as.com
94

Corner for Atleti but there is now way through the wall of white jerseys.

as.com

8 minutes of time added on by the way.

as.com
91

Griezmann strikes the free kick and the ball goes inches over the bar.

as.com

Rodrygo exits and Fran Garcia is his replacement.

as.com
89

Endrick breaks with Atleti committed to attack but the young Brazilian shoots with Bellingham in support.

Ancelotti furious with the decision.

as.com

Endrick on for Vini Jr.

as.com
86

Clock ticking down and very much against Atleti who despite all their positive intentions have yet to really trouble Courtois.

as.com

Correa goes close but the flag was up as Lucas Vazquez comes on for Modric.

as.com

Big save from Courtois as Lino goes close.

Better from the home side now as they win a corner. Madrid clear the danger and the whistle sounds as Rudiger is fouled.

as.com
79

Just over ten minutes of normal time remaining at the Estadio Metropolitano.

Atletico looking to preserve their unbeaten start to the season that a goal would offer but Real Madrid look relatively comfortable.

as.com

The suspension seems to have affected Atletico more than Real Madrid with a new layer of tension smothering the game once again.

as.com

Another card with tension palpable once again (as we saw in the first half).

Alvarez carded for a foul as Simeone makes two swaps

Riquelme and Galan on for Alvarez and Correa.

as.com
73

Vini Jr. almost makes it 0-2 but Oblak gets down well and pushes the ball past the post.

as.com
71

Less than 20 minutes remain of the Madrid derby.

as.com

Gallagher fouls Valverde and is subbed for Correa.

as.com
69

We're back under way.

as.com

The game if I'm not mistaken was stopped in the 67th minute so we should see the restart from that very moment.

The match official also retakes his position on the pitch and these are depressing scenes that have tarnished the game and will provide a talking point for some time to come.

as.com

The players are back on the pitch and are undergoing a brief spell to warm-up.

as.com

The PA system confirms that the game will restart in five minutes.

as.com

We're just hearing that the referee has added a further five minutes to the original ten that were declared.

The players will obviuosly have to go through a swift warm-up period.

as.com

An embarrassment to the game and a poor advertisement for Spanish football as Someone and Koke tried to speak to the fans and appease the hardcore.

One would imagine that LaLiga will react accordingly and dish out a hefty sanction and closure of the south stand.

as.com

So, just to recap what's going on here.

Miltao puts Real Madrid ahead in the 64th minute and a few moments later, the hardcore Atleti fans in the south stand begin to launch a series of objects at Madrid keeper Courtois (lighters and a bottle).

The referee initially reported the situation to the match delegate who made a public announcement ordering the fans to cease.

The supporters continued to launch objects and the referee decided to withdraw the teams and temporarily suspend the match.

The PA system offered a time-frame of ten minutes for the restart and so we wait ....

as.com

The PA system confirms the news that the game will be restarted in ten minutes and if the launching objects doesn't stop the game will be stopped.

as.com

The game should be restarted in eight minutes.

as.com

Lighters seem to be the principal item that have been thrown at Courtois.

as.com

Atletico fans now launching a series of objects (lighters, bottles) at Courtois and the game is held up.

The referee goes once again to the math delegate and there has already been a warning.

The players leave the pitch and the game is suspended temporarily.

as.com

The referee now has to talk to the Atletico delegate after objects have been thrown on the playing field.

That goal coming very much against the run of play but what a fine strike from the Brazilian defender.

as.com
as.com

Goooooool.

Militao puts Real Madrid ahead.

as.com

Le Normand is carded for a trip on Vinicius.

First Atletico player in the book.

Modric also on a yellow card.

as.com
62

We're past the hour mark of the Madrid derby with a much brighter second half.

Still nothing of a real goal scoring chance with Rodrygo having the best effort of the half so far.

as.com

Gimenez gets a blow from Rodrygo and needs treatment with a bloody nose.

as.com

Real Madrid subs warming up ... Endrick, Guler and Fran Garcia.

as.com

Change for Atleti

Sorloth makes way for Lino.

as.com
54

A slip up from Mendy and Llorente shoots and wins a corner for his side.

A much better start to the half after the tense affair that we saw in the first period.

as.com
53

Atleti build up on their right hand channel and De Paul looks to dink the ball to the back post but the effort is under hit and Madrid clear the danger.

as.com
51

Valverde shoots from distance and wins a corner as his effort ricochets off Gallagher.

Rodrygo strikes and the ball is just inches over Oblak's bar.

Well worked from the visitors from the corner.

as.com
48

Atleti have come out with an added gear and Madrid seem a little shell shocked from this added intensity.

as.com
46

Bright start from Atleti as Alvarez shoots at Valverde's back... the ball did strike the Uruguayan on the hands but no way the referee could have awarded a spot kick with his hands behind his back.

Atleti need more from Conor Gallagher too in this second 45'.

as.com

Atleti set to start the second half.

as.com

No changes for Real Madrid at the interval.

as.com

Koke is on and it's Molina who makes way.

as.com

Koke seems to be the one player Atleti fans feel could be a game changer.

as.com

All Atleti subs on the pitch warming up at the break and zero Madrid players carrying out drills.

as.com

0-0 at the break

as.com

Tension ..... the word that underpins the Madrid derby so far.

Both teams playing with all the pressure a game of this nature throws up.

Chances have been few and far between with Valverde and Bellingham testing Oblak and Julian Alvarez going close for the home side in a game with clear scoring chances very much at a premium.

Atleti fans calling for Koke at the interval but the game does need someone to offer 'something different'.

as.com
as.com

The whistle sounds and its stalemate so far in the Madrid derby.

as.com

First corner of the night for Atleti.

Good work from Sorloth.

Griezmann to take. Sorloth heads into Courtois' arms.

as.com
43

Rodrigo de Paul really has been Atletico's weak link tonight with the Argentine culpable now on a number of occasions of giving the ball away cheaply and putting his side under pressure.

as.com

Both teams cancelling one another out so far tonight.

Madrid also applying a very high press denying Atleti the opportunity to move the ball around with the time they would wish.

as.com

Modric carded as he stamps a rival player.

First booking of the night.

as.com
39

Approaching the half time whistle and the game is still being played with the tension and nervous energy that one would expect from a big city derby match.

Two half chances per side but no real clear cut chances so far.

as.com

Nervy times as Oblak (yes Oblak) dribbles past Vinicius in his own 6 yard box !

as.com
36

Jude Bellingham gets another shot off for Madrid but easy for Oblak as the Atleti captain is quick to react.

as.com

Real Madrid ahead on 'points' after 35 minutes of action.

One shot on target a piece and Madrid edging things on possession 48-52 (%).

as.com
31

We pass the half an hour mark and the game is still a tight and tense affair.

Madrid enjoying the bulk of possession in the past few minutes.

as.com
28

We've seen little or nothing from Sorloth this evening with the former Villarreal man putting in plenty of running but yet to get on the ball.

as.com
27

Llorente clips Vini Jr. and it's a dangerous free for Madrid as Valverde stands over the ball but the Uruguayan drives the ball wide.

Very ambitious from the Madrid No. 8.

as.com

Courtois also getting pelters from the home fans ... Still a sore point for Atleti supporters the way he moved to Real Madrid a few years back following his Atleti-Chelsea and Madrid trajectory.

as.com

Just the one clear chance per side. Alvarez for Atleti and Valverde for the visitors.

as.com

Possession after 20'

Atleti 46-54 Real Madrid (%)

as.com
as.com

Twenty minutes gone and the game is being dominated by both sided in waves.

After a solid spell form Atleti, Madrid getting back into the action now.

as.com
17

Great hit from Valverde and the effort forces a superb stop from Jan Oblak.

Another corner for the visitors.

as.com

Griezmann 500

as.com
12

Real Madrid win a corner as Modric skips away and Llorente has to intervene.

Vini picks up the ball and ultimately the move breaks down and is back with Oblak.

as.com
10

Possession after 10'

Atleti 23-77 Real Madrid (%)

as.com
10

First chance of the night falls to Julian Alvarez and Courtois stands tall to save from the Argentine.

The angle was very acute to be fair to the striker.

as.com
8

Atletico with a period of sustained possession now as De Paul looks to centre but fires too close to Courtois.

Better from the home side now.

as.com
6

Griezmann looks for Sorloth but too much on the pass and Sorloth was unable to latch on the pass.

as.com
5

Atleti have been on the back foot for the opening five minutes with all the initative coming from the men in white.

as.com
2

Vini on the ball with the Brazilian greeted with a series of whistles from the home fans.

All the early play in Atletico's half.

as.com
1

Dangerous ball in from Carvajal but just too much on the cross for Vini Jr.

as.com

Real Madrid start the game.

as.com

Modric and Oblak the captains for tonight's clash pose for the pregame protocol snap with referee Mateo Busquets Ferrer.

as.com

The stadium is engulfed in a red, white and blue sea with the mosaic design and the banner in the south stand reads ' Until my final days'.

The teams are on the pitch.

as.com

AC/DC's Thunderstruckhas just started on the PA system as the house lights are dimmed ... it's game time at the Estadio Civitas Metropolitano !

as.com

Warm ups are over as the players return to the dressing room with kick-off looming.

A packed house awaits with 67,000 Colchoneros and just 300 hardy travelling Madridstas.

as.com

Atleti warming up too with a slightly different reaction from the home fans to the arrival of their players.

15 minutes to go to kick-off.

Jude Bellingham

Bellingham looking to get off the mark

The former BVB player has yet to find the target this season having bagged 23 goals. Mbappé's injury sees the Englishman back into a more attacking role ahead of the derby tonight at the Metropolitano.
