Premier League leaders Manchester City travel to Madrid to take on Atlético Madrid on Wednesday. Pep Guardiola’s side lead 1-0 from the first leg after Kevin De Bruyne broke down a tight and resolute Atlético. The Belgian latched on to Phil Foden’s pass before finishing past Jan Oblak on his 50th Champions League appearance for the Club.

Diego Simeone’s side need at least one goal in the second leg and will look to the likes of João Félix going forward. The Argentine head coach produced a 5-5-0 formation at times at the Etihad, which led to City only having two shots on target in the whole game.

For the first time in any competition in Simeone’s 11 years as head coach, Atlético finished the game against City without a single attempt on goal.

Atlético Madrid team news

Simeone will select a side without injured centre-back José María Giménez. Mexico international Héctor Herrera also misses the match in Madrid through injury.

A recent regular starter in the centre of a midfield three, the experienced Herrera who will leave for the MLS this summer, remains sidelined. He will join Houston Dynamo on a deal until 2024.

Manchester City team news

Manchester City return to European action after their epic 2-2 draw with Liverpool on Sunday.

City centre-back Ruben Dias returned to training on Monday. He participated in a light session ahead of the trip to Spain.

City unbeaten in nine

Man City are unbeaten in nine games in all competitions. Guardiola’s side are one point ahead of Liverpool following Sunday’s draw at the Etihad Stadium.

Atlético currently sit fourth in La Liga, with their six match winning run in the league ended by a 1-0 defeat at Mallorca on Saturday.
