Atletico vs Real, LaLiga, 18/09/2022
AS English

Six games into the 2022/23 LaLiga campaign and the first Madrid derby of the season is already upon us. Atlético have the honour of playing host to their city rivals and the chance to clamber their way back up the table and into the or near the European places. Simeone’s team sit in seventh place on 10 points - five points behind Real Madrid, who are one of two teams who remain unbeaten in LaLiga. The other being Barcelona who returned to the summit on Saturday after beating Elche 3-0 at Camp Nou but their lead is just one point.

The Week 6 LaLiga game between Atlético and Real Madrid will kick off at 3 p.m. EDT/12 noon PDT at the Cívitas Metropolitano, Madrid on Sunday 18 September 2022 for viewers in the United States. That’s 21:00 hours local time (CEST) or 8 p.m. (BST) in the UK. Find out what time the game kicks off wherever you are in the world here.

With Karim Benzema ruled out and Antoine Griezmann primed to make his usual brief cameo for the last half hour, all eyes will be on two younger stars - João Félix and Vinicius. The Portuguese forward has been involved in 56% of Atlético’s goals in the current league campaign and served up three assists. Vinicius meanwhile has played an active part in 47% of Madrid’s 15 goals this season, scoring four of them himself.

Atlético will be glad to welcome back goalkeeper Jan Oblak, who missed the team’s last two games with a thigh injury. Simeone confirmed that both of his first-choice centre-backs Savic and Giménez remain on the injury list - as does full-back Sergio Reguilón. From what we could gather from last week’s training sessions, El Cholo will likely field a five-man defence - Felipe, Witsel and Reinildo in central defence with Molina and Saúl as wing-backs.

Karim Benzema misses the game as he has been unable to shake off a knee injury. He has no natural replacement but Ancelotti will likely plump for Rodrygo ahead of Hazard to lead the attack. The Madrid coach has recovered Militão, who succumbed to injury in Glasgow, along with Mendy and Kroos.

The stats suggest that Madrid go into the game as favourites - they have won all of the seven games played so far this season, including two wins in the Champions League; they score more goals from set-pieces (three to Atleti’s one), concede less, have 10 times as many attempts on goal and are less prone to lose possession - an area in which Atlético’s figures have dropped. But this is a derby and the toughest rivals Madrid have faced so far at the start of the new season.

Prediction: Atlético 1-1 Real Madrid
