Austria international Stefan Lainer diagnosed with cancer

Gladbach have confirmed that the Austria international will be out for action for several months as he receives treatment.

Borussia Mönchengladbach defender Stefan Lainer has been diagnosed with cancer of the lymph nodes, according to the German club.

Gladbach have confirmed that the Austria international will be out for action for several months as he receives treatment.

According to the club, the cancer has been detected early and is treatable with medication.

“We will do all we can to get Stevie the best possible treatment. We wish him and his family lots of strength and optimism in the fight against this disease,” said Roland Virkus, board member for sport at Borussia.

The player, 30, and the Bundesliga club have also confirmed that no medical details about the treatment or recovery will be published beyond today’s information.

“Borussia Mönchengladbach and Stefan Lainer would like fans and the media to respect the fact that no further details on his treatment and recovery will be made public.”

Lainer has been at the club Gladbach since 2019, playing over 100 times for the club. He has also represented his country on 37 occasions.
