Spain were involved in what was essentially a meaningful Euro 2024 qualifier against Georgia on Sunday, with Luis de la Fuente’s side having already booked their place in the tournament with matches to spare. However, one incident in the game could have a big impact on Barcelona’s LaLiga and Champions League prospects as Gavi was forced off the field due to injury.

Spain team doctor “very worried” about Gavi injury

The youngster felt a twinge in his right knee after a challenge with a Georgian opponent but attempted to play on. He then positioned himself to take a high pass out of the air near the touchline, quickly twisting his body 180 degrees as he looked to control the ball and run towards the penalty area. As he turned, however, he immediately knew something was badly wrong, with his groans picked up by the pitch side microphones.

Gavi was replaced by Oihan Sancet in the 26th minute, with Spain’s team doctor Óscar Luis Celada revealing he was “very worried” for the Barça man when asked about his injury at half time by Spanish broadcaster RTVE.

Youngster to undergo tests with Spain and Barça

It is still too early to say with any certainty how serious the injury is, but the initial signs don’t look especially promising. The 19-year-old will undergo initial tests with the national team in Valladolid before returning to Barcelona for further examination.

La Blaugrana have had a whole host of injury issues to deal with in the first few months of the season but Gavi has been immune to them until now, missing only two matches because of suspension. He has started 13 of Barcelona’s 17 games, playing the full 90 minutes on 10 occasions.
