Barcelona are reportedly trying to sign LA Galaxy defender Julián Araujo on loan before the end of the January transfer window on Tuesday.

Spanish outlet Relevo report that Barça have been in negotiations for the right-back for what would be a loan deal with an option to buy.

The Mexican player, 21, would officially join as a reserve team player and would be called up to the first team when Xavi needs to boost his squad.

Araujo would join the Barça team coached by his compatriot Rafa Márquez. The Camp Nou club will need a right-back if the departure of Héctor Bellerín to Portuguese side Sporting CP is confirmed.

With Pedro Porro on his way to Tottenham, Bellerín could join Sporting as his replacement in the next 24 hours.

Araujo previously on Barça’s radar

Araujo was on Barça’s radar last summer, when the Blaugrana club were looking to strengthen in that position, but they finally opted for Bellerín, who arrived on a free transfer on the last day of the transfer window after cancelling his one-year contract with Arsenal.

Moves from USMNT to Mexico

After initially representing the United States at underage level and once at senior level, Araujo became a Mexico international and has made three senior appearances for El Tri. His Mexico debut came under former head coach Tata Martino.

In 2021, he petitioned for the switch which was approved by FIFA.

“My heart is with Mexico. I’m grateful for every opportunity that US soccer has provided me to help me grow as a soccer player and now I am excited to continue my international career with Mexico,” Araujo said in a statement.
