Barcelona continue their march to LaLiga title number 27 by welcoming Diego Simeone’s Atlético to Camp Nou. Out of Europe and the Copa del Rey, the league is all that remains for Xavi Hernández’s men to play for this season - the competition in which they have shown the most consistency.

The gap between their nearest rivals Real Madrid now looks way too big for Barça to be caught but mathematically they are still not safe with 24 points still up for grabs. Xavi will want to ensure that his side don’t cave in and throw all of their hard work away just when it matters most.

If there is a visiting team capable of instigating a Barça collapse, it’s Atleti. They have only lost here once in their last three visits and have targets of their own to meet - they are still in with an outside chance of nudging Real Madrid from second place while Champions League football next season is almost guaranteed.

Barcelona vs Atlético preview:

Barcelona

Xavi’s team continue to dominate at the top of the table where they have led for most of the campaign. Apart from a couple of minor blips, including a draw at home to Girona a fortnight ago, it has been pretty much plain sailing for the Catalans who boast the best defensive figures in all of the major European leagues.

Barça have only dropped points in six games since the season started with just two defeats - to Real Madrid back in October and Almería in February - both away from home. At Camp Nou their record has been impeccable - they have conceded just two goals in 14 games at their stadium. Figures that are not just impressive but could also see them setting new records at national and continent level if they can keep this up between now and when the season wraps up in June.

After Atlético, Barcelona’s run-in looks reasonably straightforward with their toughest games, against two of the teams aspiring to play Champions League football next season, Real Sociedad and Betis, both due to visit Camp Nou.

As for injuries, the casualty room is slowly clearing out with just Dembélé and Pedri yet to overcome their respective fitness issues.

Atlético

Atlético have shown over the years that they should never be ruled out of this fixture - regardless of how both teams are performing or where they are in the table. The Rojibancos, who are currently sat in third place, have come away from Camp Nou with all three points when they have been least expected to - their most recent victory in October 2021.

And on top of that, El Cholo’s team are hitting form just when it counts. They have been riding the crest of a wave pretty much since the New Year started - their only defeat in the league in 2023 was curiously enough to Barcelona in the capital on 8 January.

Since then, Atleti have looked confident, consistent and united. Álvaro Morata is the team’s top scorer in the league with 12 goals and has partnered Antoine Griezmann while Memphis has been out with a muscle injury although the Dutchman is expected to return to face his old club, although maybe not in the starting XI.

Barcelona vs Atlético prediction:

A contest between the two teams with the best defensive figures in LaLiga, and two of the top goalkeepers in the world, Marc-André ter Stegen and Jan Oblak, suggests that there probably isn’t going to be a lot of goals in this. Barcelona will be keen to take another step towards the title and will be spurred on by a home crowd who can already sense that it won’t be long before they are celebrating at the Canaletes fountain. The locals will be more up for this and that could be the decisive factor on the day.
