Bayern Munich’s search for a replacement for injured goalkeeper Manuel Neuer seems to have come to an end. As many media outlets in Germany and Switzerland assume, Yann Sommer will finally be the one to replace the Germany international, who is out until the end of the season after suffering a tibial fracture while skiing on vacation. Bayern secure the goalkeeper who, from the outset, was the club technical secretary’s first option - the Bundesliga champions kept persisting despite receiving numerous refusals from ‘Gladbach.

After Borussia Mönchengladbach rejected Bayern’s second offer earlier in the week, the two sides ended up reaching an agreement on Wednesday. The Swiss keeper did not train with his team mates and instead, headed to Munich to undergo the relevant medical tests and sign for for the Bundesliga champion. According to German and Swiss media, Bayern will pay a total of 8 million euros for the transfer plus a further 1.5 million in add-ons. Sommer’s contract will keep him at the Allianz Arena until 2025.

Jonas Omlin was a key factor in the operation. Mönchengladbach made it clear from the outset that they would not allow Sommer to leave until they secured a guaranteed replacement. Their primary option was the Montpellier goalkeeper. As soon as the negotiations with the French team were on the right path, the German club gave Sommer the green light to accept a move to Munich. Sommer’s contract at Borussia Park was due to expire at the end of the season. It remains to be seen how the situation evolves in the Munich framework once Neuer, already 37 years old, has recovered from his injury and returns to the side.
