The Laureus World Sports Awards are considered the most important of the year. There are eight categories in which there are six nominees for each one. This year, Linda Caicedo has made the list of outstanding athletes, along with names such as Jude Bellingham, Salma Paralluelo, Coco Gauff, Qin Haiyang and Josh Jerr.

Linda Caicedo is the standout name of the list and she has once again been nominated to receive individual recognition in her short career. Last year she received multiple awards (Queen of America, The Best finalist, Golden Girl) and has now been selected by journalists from around the world to be part of a group of 6 candidates to win the award for Breakthrough of the Year given by the Laureus World Sports Academy.

This will be the 25th edition of the Awards. In 2000 they were delivered for the first time and since then they have gained recognition as some of the most prestigious in sport.

Linda Caicedo is the first Colombian woman and the fifth Colombian to be nominated as part of the awards, considered by many to be ‘the Oscars of sport’. The Colombian is currently playing with the Colombian National Team in the W Gold Cup in which they are currently second in Group B with 3 points and will seal their qualification to the next phase on Tuesday when they face Puerto Rico.

“Linda Caicedo of Colombia played in all three editions of the tournament in the same year, three years after she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer,” said the announcement made by the Awards Academy for the player’s selection among the nominees in her category.

It will be the first time that this ceremony is held in Madrid; the previous year it was held in Paris and Messi was named the best athlete of that edition. In the Breakthrough of the Year award, tennis player Carlos Alcaraz won and in the Best Team award, the Argentine national team was the winner after winning the World Cup in Qatar.
